Alright everyone, I'm writing an article about the journeymen in boxing, and wondered what your opinions are on them. Do they benefit the boxing world, or is their presence a constant reminder of the dangers of boxing? Should they be subjected to more stringent testing than guys who are often winning fights? And should there be a cut off period, for example if a boxer loses more than 10 fights in a row, should they lose their license? Also, this might be more for Jeff and the guys actually involved in boxing, but if any of you have links to guys who could be construed as journeymen (and actual 'successful boxers - do they hold back when they're fighting a bloke who has lost 50 fights?') could you possibly send me a PM giving me details as how best to contact them? the boxing monthly with haye and harrsion on the front.your man interviewed was told when he went pro he could be the hometown fighter and have to sell tickets, be involved in the promoting or turn up in the opposite corner and get paid. he admitted to fighting to not get ko'd and holding back
There are different levels of journeymen and their records don't necessarily tell the full tale. I too don't think the license being revoked after so many losses is a good idea as some guys like Peter Buckley were able to develop enough ring savvy to survive without getting badly hurt and in doing so giving the prospect some rounds whilst enabling himself to box again within a week or two. Clearly a Latvian cabbie that gets sparked 10 fights in a row should not be allowed to continue so it's horses for courses. Decent tough journeymen that can give young guys some rounds are an essential part of the game
according to that peter buckley only had 8 wins...it was a lot more than that. he once fought for an international / inter-continental title.
Some are dangerous for up and coming fighters.Journeymen like Ross Purity and Emannuel Agustus are great for testing prospects and are vital to the developement of future world champions in the game. Purity and Agustus have some wins aginst world class competition aswell so jpourney men are sometimes a lot better than their records suggest
Peter was a midlands area champion, beat good fighters in Matt Brown, Peter Judson and had draws with Sean Hughes and Martin Hardcastle among others. He was very canny.
He also had 3 decent fight with Kelly Oliver who was an ABA champ and considered a real prospect 13 odd years ago
