I've just finally finished the first issue. First impressions are that it's got high production values - this isn't something you'll throw away or leave on the bus; it's for collecting. It looks and feels quality. I like that a lot of the old features are still there and the interviews are good. I do wonder if they can keep this up, though. Twenty pages of nostalgia will be hard to keep going and I don't know how much interest there'll be in month-old fight reports; 110 pages is a lot to fill. I also wonder whether punters will pay £11.99 for what is still a magazine - even a tenner on subscription seems steep. I'll carry on for the first few then see what happens. What's everyone else's thoughts?
Jesus £11.99, per month? Back in the day when I got them was it not £3.99? I was excited until I saw the price.
I subscribed a pay a tenner. I enjoyed it. I think £10 is a fair price tbh. I'm sure they will be able to keep it going. They are professionals. I've been buying boxing weekly for as long as I can remember. Was sad to see it go but not surprised. I will always do what I can to support them and keep them going. That magazine has been in my family for years. Grandad, Dad, Brother and then my children have all enjoyed reading it.
I was a Boxing News subscriber for 40 years but cancelled it in December following the decision to go monthly. The whole point of the magazine was that it was bang up to date reviewing and previewing and that is not the case now.I will buy the odd issue but i fear this venture is doomed to failure.Hope i am wrong as it will be very sad if it comes to that
So clearly this is different from that old glossy Boxing Monthly magazine I used to subscribe to 25-30 years ago. What happened to that publication?
Completely agree. It needs to be bang up to date n the modern world. I love nostalgia but there’s too much of it. Month old fight reports are a disaster. Does anyone want to read reports on the Dalton Smith and Josh Kelly fights when it’s out next week. The Ball fight will probably be in the following issue. Be honest, that’s horrendous. There’s really no place for fight reviews and previews in a monthly magazine and it’s naive to think it is. The weekly fight preview email for subscribers is nowhere to be seen. I had tremendous loyalty to Boxing News, a magazine that I had read unbroken since 1989. This isn’t BoxingNews anymore so that same loyalty has gone. It’s doomed to failure as you said and asa lot of people on this forum, the boxing hardcore, baulk at subscribing to DAZN to watch actual boxing, these same people ain’t going to pay £12 to read a magazine and if you can’t get the hardcore, your f***** !
Not interested internet much better , everything I need here , not paying 12 pound to read some blokes opinion , internet fee enuff , it wont survive
To be fair to Boxing News when i first heard it was going monthly i contacted them regarding the matter. The editor send me a really nice email agreeing with most of the points i raised. However he said it was economically not viable to carry on in its present format and they had to try something new to keep it going. While recognising his point i feel long time subscribers like you and me wiil be lost and god help them getting new people interested
Absolutely right. I did the same. I had one email like yours and then a follow up email that was a little bit ' testy ' challenging my opinions which is fair enough. It always was yesterday's news today but now it's last months news today which is stretching things too far. If there was some ' big ' news, a new tv deal, a new promotional company or a big fight announcement, I'd look forward to what BN had to say about it a few days later. Now it could be up to 5/6 weeks later when everything that needs to be said has been said. It just isn't going to work unless you love reading long form articles about times gone by whether past or present. In the social media age, no one really wants to do that. It's like catering for a 1970s audience 50 years too late. Call me a lightweight but I don't really want to read another 6 page article about Adam Booth or the thriller in Manilla. The modern world is ' snappy ', its the equivalent of a one liner joke where as BN monthly is like a Ronnie Corbett monologue. It's a real shame.
I switched to the digital copy of Boxing News years ago for convenience, but I can’t say I’ve read it anywhere near as much in that format compared to the traditional print version. At this point I’m probably supporting it more out of loyalty than anything, because it’d be a proper shame if it ever went out of print. But it’s good to see they’ve got Graham Houston on board in some capacity. I always thought the key USP of Boxing News was that Friday drop, in time for the weekend’s fights. Going monthly feels like it risks turning into those old American mags that were weeks and often months behind the event, and in today’s attention economy that makes it even more of a hardcore fan product than it already was. Fair play to them and Oliver for giving it a go though, because editing that kind of product is a ball-breaking job and it’s clearly a passion project run on a shoestring. And whatever you think of the direction, they’ve stuck at it without turning into yet another “access journalism” outlet like 99% of boxing media.
im not directly paying for those opinions and i get to chip in also , engage in the discussions , i pay for my internet and it covers all i do on the internet at 7 pound per month , so hows it the same bright spark
