    Down for the count
    Sucker Punch
    Fancy Footwork
    Below the belt

    and many, many more.

Tbh, no other sport really comes close to boxing in this area, probabily because of the nature of the sport and also because it's a metaphor for life. Boxing wins by a knockout when it comes to the idiom stakes.

    going toe to toe

    coming out fighting

    down and out

    the gloves are off

    below the belt

    squaring off

    taking a dive

    throwing in the towel

So there appear to be lots of things which are said day to day. I never really thought of it. Great thread.

Its the epitome of one on one competition. There is no other sport like it. There are no time-outs, no team mates, no breaks when your hurt. The sport still tugs at our natural primal instincts. Whether modern society wants to accept it or not we are still humans and still have that caveman in us who is still hunting sabre tooths.

    yeah, exactly.

i was watching wimbledon this year(which i enjoy) and tht fat munter clare balding had the audacity and studipity to say "what i love about this sport is so raw! only the two men out there, competing, with no teammates or help. theres no sport like it"
she was talking about the tennis btw

stupid *****. i was shouting abuse at the tv when she said it

Okay, I have a slightly different view (maybe thats why i'm attracted to passive, slicksters lol) I think what you've said there is a bit of a cliche and doesn't really help boxing, it's something a person opposed to it would say before going into the 'but'. I see your point though.

Yep, Jonny Mc is a big boxing fan and references it almost everytime he commentates.
