Rocky Marciano was apparently a bit tight with his money which inadvertantly led to his death. He'd bummed a freebie lift in the plane that day

He also didn't trust banks and as a result a lot of his money is probably still hidden in the places where he stashed it

Virgil Hill v Leslie Stewart - Trump Plaza Hotel, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA.

Hill wins the WBA light heavyweight title by TKO in round 4 of 12.

    This content is protected

Hill would retain the title through 10 successful defences until mid 1991. But a UD loss to Thomas Hearns would end his initial reign.

Hill would later win what had become the vacant title in 1992, and later add to it the IBF title.

Birth date of the great Maxie Rosenbloom.

    This content is protected

Born in Leonard's Bridge, Connecticut, Rosenbloom was nicknamed "Slapsie Maxie" due to his open gloved style of striking.

Rosenbloom won the World light heavyweight title in 1932, and held it until November 1934, when he lost it to Bob Olin.

Rosenbloom relied on hitting and moving to accumulate points. He was very difficult to hit cleanly and his fights often went the full distance. He suffered thousands of head punches, which eventually led to the deterioration of his motor functions.

He took on Hollywood film roles late in his boxing career, usually portraying comical big guys, and later operated a few nightclubs.

    Here's one for you Josey:

Vicente Saldivar v Howard Winstone - Earls Court Arena, Kensington, London, United Kingdom.

Mexican Saldivar retains his World featherweight title on PTS over 15 rounds. This was the first meeting between them, with Saldivar inflicting only the 3rd loss of the 'Welsh Wizzard' Winstone's 56 fight career.

The pair would square off 3 times in all. With Saldivar taking the chocolates on each occassion, and accounting for half of the losses on Winstone's career record of 61 wins (27 by KO) and 6 losses.

Sandy Saddler v Willie Pep - Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York, USA.

    This content is protected

Saddler wins back the World featherweight title he lost to Pep the year earlier. Pep was unable to come out for the 8th round due to a separated shoulder suffered at the end of round 7.

Although it was only the previous year that Saddler lost the title to Pep (by UD over 15 rounds), Saddler had about 24 bouts in between and Pep about 15. Now that's active!

    ...Vasilly Jirov.

A southpaw, Jirov was spoken of as a potential next challenger for Danny Green's IBO cruiser weight title, but as announced yesterday, BJ Flores has the gig.

Flores gives Jirov a dose of the Zab Judah chicken walk during a sparring session:

The IRS (Internal Revenue Serve) places a $6.3-million tax lien on
Mike Tyson's 61-room mansion in Farmington, Connecticut.

The house below was also Tyson's, but I think a different one to the one above:

It's worth a laugh having a look through the internal photos on the website - for instance it had lion cages, and he intended to spar with the lions to stay fit.

Also love the description they provide:

'Mike Tyson’s abandoned Ohio mansion is not only one of the finest examples of early-American pimp, it’s hard to find someone with that taste with enough money to buy a multi-million dollar mansion'.

...enjoy your visit through Tyson's pimped up mansion:

Here's one with a double dose of local flavour:

Kevin Kelly v Leo Young Jnr - Abcos Stadium, Morphettville, Adelaide, South Australia.

'Bones' Kelly won the Commonwealth and Australian light middleweight titles on PTS over 12 rounds.

The until then unbeaten Young, suffered a cut mouth early in the fight that bled throughout.

Unfortunately the closest I could get to a picture of these two was a picture of Leo Young Snr, Leo's father:

Muhammad Ali V Ken Norton - Sports Arena, San Diego, California, USA.

    This content is protected

Ali avenges a defeat from 6 months earlier with a PTS wins over 12 rounds - the judges having it 7-5, 6-5-1, 5-6-1.

Though I'm a huge fan of Ali, I reckon he was a bit lucky to get the points in either of the fights he 'won' against Kenny Norton. Reputation seemed to play a part in the scoring of some of Ali's bouts.
