Thats true I think. To a certain extent. He was a protected fighter for most of his career, his '46-0 persona' was a product of careful Frank Warren matchmaking. Was he a great fighter or just a very good one? Who knows...without the benefit of re-writing history, its hard say.

....who greatest victory was a split decision over a 43 year old legend at the arse end of his career.

Sometimes being a 'very good' fighter is good enough.

Ive had this argument a million times before but, Yes , i think Calzaghe is a 'Warren' product in alot of ways ..... Its a personal opinion of mine and its to do with the fact that he stayed in the Super Middle division for so long. The 168 lbs division has always for the last 15 years been a 'stepping stone' division for the great middles who want to go to 175 lbs .....
The 168 division has always been as weak as Cruiser, especially if you decide to stay in Wales/England and defend your WBO title for years ....
I am not a fan of Joe Calzaghe because i have an education in boxing that stretches back to to the early 1900's, thats why you, Guy, are impressed with Joe and im not ....
Joe Calzaghe chose to stay at Super Middle for years, Joe Calzaghe Chose to defend his meaningless WBO title for years and make nice paydays for years without really testing himself and going to the states ..
I respect him for beating Lacey and Kessler but at the end of the day these 2 guys have proven themselves to be nobodies .. He then takes on Hokpins and Jones who are both way past they're best, gets dropped by both of them and i'm supposed to believe he's one of the greatest fighters of all time ?? Im sorry Guy, but Joe Calzaghe doesnt even figure in the top 100 fighters i've studied and theres no chance of him rising in my estimation .... He is without doubt a 'Warren' product with some good ability, who took his major fights at the right time, but who never had to face a truly great fighter who was in they're prime in his entire career ..

Hoya Hopkins pwned Pavlik and is still in the top five P4P boxers in the world whatever list you look at.

Joe was at the end of his carrer also, it's not like he was some young buck aka Chad Dawson.

    Joe is great for sure.

Yeah, Hopkins is and was a great fighter, I give Calzaghe a lot of credit for the 'w', and if it had been a clear and convincing win I might be inclined to describe Calzaghe as 'great'. But it wasn't, so I can't.

Being the 'best super-middle' ever doesn't automatically make you great, seeing its a division essentially created to keep an ageing Sugar Ray Leonard in the fight game. It has very little depth or history.

Axl that's fine if you don't rate Joe's fighting skills, personally I do.
Light heavy is a weak division at the mo and i feel Joe would rule it.

Thats fine but by denigrating Joe that;s sullying the whole SMW division of which I find an exciting weight.

The Super Middleweight division is 20 years old. It was only created because Sugar Ray Leonard wasnt comfortable making 160 lbs in his late 30s, and there was plenty of money to be made on the dying embers of Leonards career .... Other than that the Super Middle division has been a stepping stone between 160 to 175 ..... Theres only Calzaghe that has stayed there for any length of time, Jones, Toney and Nunn used it as a means to put weight on gradually before they stepped up to 175 ..
Super Middle is like Cruiser, its a nothing division that isnt respected ..... If Joe was around in the 70's he would have had to have chosen to boil down to 160 and therefore face Carlos Monzon at middle, or put on weight to go to 175 and take on Bob Foster .. Either way, he is knocked out, so dont try and tell me he's a great fighter because he's fought at 168 for his whole career ......... He's a 'Product', and Guy, i bet you've bought his DVD ......

    Who's denigrating Joe?

Just because I don't subscribe to your opinion that Calzaghe was a 'great' fighter doesn't mean I'm denigrating him.

His achivements and, much more importantly - resume suggest he was a very good fighter. Beat a prime RJJ, or Bhop, or add a few more names to his resume, and then I'd call him great.

You can't sit on a title for most of your career, fighting 'C' class fighters for the most part and then expect people to autmatically assume you're great.

168 is a great division at the moment, one of the best, if not the best.

Calzaghe clearly beat Kessler, who ranks above him at the weight?
