Yeah, Zaheer's record in England is good. But in Australia he averaged 40 and even in SA high 30's. I expected better since I consider him a skillful bowler that swings the ball both ways.

Johnson did well in SA and has respectable figures in India and SL as well as at home. Gotta give it to him...he's better than I thought, he looks like a mug that doesn't even look at what he's doing and the ball comes out scrambled. I guess the weird action and pace work for him.

I'm not that sure about Gambhir...... a lot of his runs will have come on the same flat decks that Zaheer struggles to get wickets on.

Jayawardene is a better pick than either Smith or Ponting as captain though :good

    Both have a strong case

My ODI team might even feature Dwayne Bravo. He can bat, bowl(sort of) and field. He's an athlete.

Ponting's a shite captain, worst ever. A school boy cricketer with over a 100 IQ could do better.

But there aren't that many quality openers around. Strauss/Smith/Gayle/Gambhir are the only really good ones I can think of. Strauss would also be a solid pick, Gayle is too inconsistent for me. The thing is, some Australians/English are shite in the sub-continent, so it works both ways.

The bowling depth around the world is horrible. Prime Matt Hoggard is the best new ball bowler in the world right now.

    Now then TFFP

I'm not up to speed on my cricket by any means however I always presumed that Ponting was an excellent captain. What makes you say otherwise ??

Captaincy is easy when you have(or had) Warne and McGrath to throw the ball to

You have to be up to speed to know if a cricket captain is doing a good job, especially when its the captain of the #1 team that masks his flaws. He's crap, he's proven it time and time again when the team are actually under pressure and not coasting it he comes up short.

To be fair though..... would you want to be a bowler?

Bat technology has improved ten-fold over the past 15 years, to which point that an average of about 48 makes a good Test player, 55 a great one - it used to be 40 & 50!

Throw in shorter boundaries and dead pitches etc.

Ponting is excellent captaining in ODI's, but in Tests he seems to lack that little something. His declarations are usually perfectly timed, but other than that he is average. Poor management of his bowlers, too quick to defend etc - if he wasn't an ATG batsman and popular amongst his players he'd have been fired ages ago.

[Edit - that's why I suggested separate sides for sub-continent and other conditions  Ponting wouldn't get in the sub-continent side, for instance]

How did you come to the conclusion he's good based on the Ashes? He's lost 2 of the last 3 against fecking England who are decent but not extraordinary and Australia were always favourites

Any school boy could set bog standard fields with 3 slips and a gully and the requisite close fielders for the spinner with Warne and McGrath and come out looking like geniuses the majority of the time. When the tough gets going..Ponting goes home, or at least on the retreat. Ponting being good in ODI's probably just highlights his lack of imagination, ODI's are formulaic for the most part and easy. Captaincy effects tests big time but in ODI's lets face it, batting wins the game.

He has been blessed, it's plainly obvious.

    ATG's....

    Warne
    McGrath

    World Class.......

    Lee
    Johnson
    Gillespie
    Kasprowicz
MacGill - would have been close to ATG but for Warne

    Very Good......

    Siddle
    Hilfy
    Bracken

Not a bad lot, you agree?

    I'll try go from 1989

    You'll certainly need

    Lara
    Tendulkar
    Steve Waugh
    Glenn McGrath
    Shane Warne
    Murali

How do you get them in?

    How about Inzamam?

    Early 90's I'd be struggling

Yeah...and don't forget the batting that put 500 runs on the board. Tends to make life a wee bit easier as a captain.

I have no idea what TFFP said in his last paragraph :huh

Anyways I dont JUST watch the Ashes I watch it when its on if thats makes sense. The Ashes is the only one I'll definately watch. Ponting always seemed the one to be getting the big scores and was always the 'wicket' to get so I just presumed.

    Leave me alone :-(
