Vitali Klitschko is more of a guy who KOs everyone by accumulation. Dempsey... I don't know he got most of his before the second half of the fight and you can see most of his opponents losing their legs at some point in the 1st round. I don't call that accumulation KOs, but he had to hit the other guy more than a dozen time until he found the right punch.... Edit : I think that guys like Tyson and Foreman have set the bar too high for what a big puncher should be... Dempsey definitly was one.
I have examined gloves from the 1920's and they were built in similar fashion vs Everlast gloves from the late 70"s/early 80's. Both filled with "horsehair". The difference and I spoke with ex fighters about this years ago is that the gloves from the 20's were 60 years old with dried up leather and padding that had become compressed over time giving them a hard as concrete feel. Put 8 oz gloves on Dempsey, Louis and Marciano and they would still knock everyone out. A little extra padding is not going to alter to any great extent the power generated by any of these great punchers. The added padding would just as much protect the fighters hands allowing them to punch with even greater force with less worry about breaking their hands.
10 oz would be what they are wearing, jesus ****ing christ. Padding makes a big difference to how you punch. It alters your accuracy and sharpness and yes also power. No they were not built in similar fashion, their construction is substantially different.
All of you arguing about gloves size making a difference don't know what the **** you're talking about. The difference is negligable, as proven by sport science. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRmOOWPTRBs The reason why larger gloves are used are to protect the fighter's hands and prevent cuts.
Sports science the same show that proved that Rampage hit twice as hard as Tyson. Get the **** out of here.
No, you idiot, anyone who's ever fought in gloves of different size knows that it matters greatly. On that show, they're just measuring overall force transferred, which of course is about the same. The difference is that in more padded gloves the force is transferred over a great surface area (thus less damaging per unit area) and the force is also transferred more slowly because the fist comes to a stop slower.
Very true. Much has been written about the subject over time. The added padding protects the fighters hands more so than hurting power. The added protection allows shots to be thrown even harder.
Bull****. I get it though. You one of those MMA homosexuals. You ****in pay a man to wrap his legs around you. Think about that ****. Why don't you just box like a heterosexual man?
Anyone that has ever sparred knows the difference that gloves make. End of story. Debating whether having a big ****ing pillow on your hand has any effect imao.
The main reason that smaller gloves are more dangerous is that the gloved fist (and the body behind it) decelerates quicker (than with more padded gloves), while the opponent's head accelerates quicker, upon full contact. What causes knockouts is rapid acceleration (change in velocity) of the head, which results in the brain smashing into the skull, which is what causes the KO. That Sport Science program isn't measuring this, they are only talking about overall force transfer, which obviously will be about the same.
Padding and glove size do make a difference. Im no scientist so I cant tell you why but they do. Its why Reyes gloves are considered the punchers gloves. Less padding around the knuckles and more around the wrist. When my son boxed they sparred with 16 and later 20 oz gloves. Whenever he would put on his old 16oz gloves the sparring partners would complain and make him switch gloves. They didnt call them pillows for no reason.
