I see MGM Scotland have made Iain Butcher v Thomas Essomba for the Commonwealth title on 7 May in Scotland. Looks like a really good fight. Not much of Essomba online but his record looks impressive. Has anyone seen much of Essomba? Good to see such a big fight up here on a non-TV show (unless tv pick it up)!!!
My knowledge of Essomba is also pretty limited, although he did KO Waleed Din on a Dennis Hobson show last October.
Really like this fight and as you say, seeing it on a non-televised card shows what MGM are capable of when they put their minds to it. Talk of a local grudge match of John McCallum v Tommy Philbin as well which would put bums on seats as there is a bit of bad blood there!
what weight is philbin fighting at? tbh i don't think that philbin will achieve much a pro but i agree that he would beat john mcallum who is a world class nut job lol brags about how much scottish titles, how he only lost 2 of 100 + amateur bouts, he lives in the delusional world of john mcallum and i would pay good money to watch him get ko'd and if it was philbin that would be even better because he is a nice lad and is down to earth :good
wee butcher is a decent little boxer and i hope he gets better judging than when he fought satchell. I'm going for butcher to win on points but I'm afraid since he left paul graham that his career hasn't really hit the heights of the satchel fight. :good
Butcher was very unlucky against Satchell. Hopefully he wins this one. Good for him that it is up here and he has not had to go on the road again. Is Philbin v McCallum confirmed? That would be a good domestic fight! Philbin looks well suited to the pros. McCallum has been pro a long time so would likely be favourite? Hopefully there is another good fight on the undercard too.
Not been made, no. Managers in talks today though. Sam Kynoch claimed McCallum was offered the fight on last weeks bill but bottled it. Whilst McCallum has been a pro for longer, he has only been in 9 fights and his last opponent was Mitch Mitchell - the same opponent Philbin fought last weekend! I could see Philbin winning this one.
What's that based on? Butcher isn't much of a mover/dancer and stands in the pocket and fights so I don't see how he would need to walk him down
I would be very surprised if any flyweight wants to stand toe to toe with with Essomba he is massive at the weight and very strong. His coach told me he apparently walks around at over 11 stone :shock:
It will be interesting to see if the Philbin v McCallum fight comes off. Essomba does look like a big Flyweight but apparently Butcher is also very big at the weight. Hopefully the home crowd helps him dig in and claim the title.
im not sure he really is that big tbh but he has good skills and as mentioned if he can recapture his form before he left paul grahams management and went to train with danny vaughn then i think he might just nick this one:good
I wouldn't say Butcher was big at the weight either but it's hard to know when they are so wee. He is a tidy boxer very neat and tidy but he lacks power.
