calzaghe....early to mid 80's

MMH never moved up to SMW because the MW division was one of the big 3 (HW, MW and WW pretty much in that order followed by LHW and LW). Also SMW only came into being at the tail end of his career and NO ONE took it seriously at the time. For MMH to make that move would be like going from the NBA champion into college ranks. The move he would have made was to LHW division but he was already the man in one of THE premier division so why make that move

 

shame he didn't fight no greats then....or is that just a coincidence?


oh I get you, its a hypothetical 'if a fighter is great, joe becomes greater' - theres no evidence for it apart from the near elite Kessler fight.

I'll give you workrate, but Michael Spinks was never off of his feet at 175 in a much tougher(and bigger) division than Joe fought in.

 

Yes, because Joe fought supermiddleweights and lighheavyweights as good as prime Spinks and Qawiatsch. "Slap the dog**** out of any of them," lmmfao.

Fact is, Joe Calzaghe had the greatest workrate ever for any fighter above 140. He also had a high boxing IQ and excellent handspeed for a man his size. His chin was rock solid and his footwork was very underrated. In other words, he was a terrific fighter. But in Spinks, he would be facing an undisputed ATG lightheavy who was naturally bigger than Joe is, is a much bigger puncher, and has an even higher boxing IQ. Joe's workrate would trouble Michael early, but Michael's awkwardness would give Joe fits. Joe's weakness was the fact that he stood straight up which made him susceptable to straight rights, a Spinks specialty. I see Spinks winning the 2nd half of the fight outright.
