Just watched the Calzaghe DVD that wen't through all of his defense's and a number of things strike me. Now I have always been dead in the middle of this Calzaghe arguement (not too many of us) I think he could have done more to get big fights, I do feel his skills we're overated but I do also feel there is a lot of other issues that held him back during the career. I can't be bothered to go through them because if you are an educated boxing fan you will know them. Pudwill was a 2 week replacement I'm not sure who for.
Wrong.Calzaghe himself said that Jones was shot in his autobiography. It's on record. And if Jones wasn't shot, then why did he have no footwork/footspeed and couldn't get out of the way of a punch, when those strengths used to be his specialties?AND his combo punching-another one of his greatest strengths-was practically invisible against both Trinidad and Calzaghe. Anybody that says that the Jones that fought Calzaghe was close to the Jones that was in his prime is either 1.Someone that had never seen Jones when he was in his prime. Or 2.Delusional. Or 3.A liar.Somehow,Roy's beating of (equally if not moreso shot and former welterweight) Felix Trinidad somehow catapulted Roy back into the elite of fighters when Roy couldn't even knock him out at 170 pounds?Absolute nonsense.
i just watched joe calzaghe-a legend highlight reel off youtube. if you're a calzaghe fan, stay away. if you're a hater, you'll LOVE it. probably the best fighter ever who looks like amateur-ish **** in EVERY fight (scratch that, he looked solid against lacy)
Why does everyone bring up the Pudwill fight? Anyone who is knowledgeable about Calzaghe should know that Pudwill was a late replacement for Thomas Tate. So when people mention Pudwill as an example of Calzaghe deliberately choosing **** opponents they are showing their ignorance. Yes, Calzaghe had **** defences...however, a certain number of them stemmed from the very nature of the sport (injuries/politics).
Have you heard what some of the greats of the sport have said about Calslappy? Or some of the best trainers in the sport - people who actually know boxing? Who should I believe, you, or them? :think
I don't like Joe C at all, but he deserves more respect than he gets. He beat a lotta weak guys in his long SMW reign. But when he had to, he took on younger, unbeaten champs in his division and kicked their asses. Bhop and RJ were older, and the Bhop decision was questionable, but he did get both decsions. And he did this at the end of his career.
Sloppy Joe is a bum.... no technique, no power, and most importantly no class. Kid can't keep his mouth shut about his overrated accomplishments. If the guy fought one of the three Glen Johnson, Chad Dawson, or Antonio Tarver I would have had instant respect for the guy. Guy dodged fighters A LOT better than he dodged punched.
Methinks you doth protest too loudly here, my man. You're letting your disdain for Calzaghe cloud your perspective here. As i've mentioned already, there was more demand for this fight from fans and media than any other fight either of these two could have made. And both were at the end of their careers, out for a final payday, and some fun. Many knowledgeable analysts (including the guy in your avatar), including Lennox Lewis and Bernard Hopkins, picked Jones. While I don't regard the fight as very significant for either guy, it was a fight between two top ten ranked LHWS. Nothing whatsoever 'shameful' about it. Your citing of Calzaghe's earlier statement means little. Boxers make such remarks all the time. It's part of the game. Was it shameful of Larry Holmes to fight a far more shot Ali ? Some might think the guy in your av's behaviour was a bit MORE shameul. This content is protected This content is protected That's TWICE we know about. Could he have been juiced in other bouts ? Shameful indeed !
Nonsense. More people wanted to see a rematch with Bernard Hopkins or a fight with Chad Dawson then the Jones fight. There was a reason Don King was giving away tickets on the streets of New York. Everyone knew it was a joke. Calzaghe himself said he'd never fight Jones because he'd been knocked out too much. Everyone knew he was shot to ****. Both Tyler Hanshaw and Tito went the distance with him. It was clear he was gunshy and took large amount of rounds off. If that was Calzaghe's going out party, no wonder people dont respect hsi accomplishments.
