He wasn`t interested in Collins or Benn, Eubank didn`t want Jones, Roy prefered to fight boxers like Griffin than Calzaghe.
Joe was a relatively unknown guy in a different division when Roy was fighting guys like Griffin. Griffin was undefeated and had beaten James Toney. It was a very respectable fight for only his 2nd fight at the weight.
But wait. Roy could have went down like he went back down to 175. It’s time to stop making excuses for everything Jones did. He never left the states. Never fought another heavy. Never sought a fight with Joe. But Joe needed to seek him out? It’s laughable how many passes Jones gets for his career. Even as a guy who failed his ped testing. Btw, nobody makes a big deal out of Joe beating him more than Jones fans. “Well he woulda beat him in his prime”. Guess what? He didn’t and it’s not a guarantee he would have if he tried. It’s pretty safe to say they didn’t want to fight each other when they were younger. Piling it all on one guy is silly. Guys that want to fight each other, do. Those who don’t, don’t.
There’s no excuses. You’re looking at completely different circumstances. Roy was the consensus P4P no.1 fighter in the world. Again, Joe was fighting Euro level fighters in a different division. Roy didn’t need to leave the States. He fought on HBO in New York and Vegas, where more than 90% of his competition were based. Joe was the one who needed to make the concessions in order to try and obtain the biggest fights available.
There’s no rule about that. Jones didn’t want to fight Joe as Joe didn’t want to fight Roy. Not sure why it’s so hard to say.
8 pages.. I thought wow this subject has really took off .. and then I saw roy jones' autistic step sister Loudon is participating in the thread.. so I'm guessing we can log the past 5 pages down as loudon sucking on Roys eggs yes?
Roy didn’t want to fight Joe, as Joe was insignificant during his prime. Whereas Joe didn’t want to fight Roy, simply because he was content to fight lower level fighters so he didn’t have to risk his zero. That was fine. Apart from 2 obvious things: 1. He was forever whining that he wanted the biggest fights possible. 2. He was more than happy to fight Roy when he knew that Roy was shot and offered no risk to him. That’s why he gets criticised. If you lived through the era, you would know that prime for prime, Roy was just operating on another level entirely.
We’re now in the presence of a true historian. What an absolute pleasure it is to have you here. I eagerly await your next great response.
To be fair to Calzaghe he did do something to change his circumstances later in his life. Cocaine. So... much... cocaine.
Why should he have had to move down?? Yes, Joe should have been the one to seek RJJ. An unknown welsh boxer at the time...while RJJ is the one to chase him?? No....
No rule but that's the common path in boxing. No way should RJJ have had to move down and fly to Wales to fight an unknown Joe C at the time. NO ONE was asking for that back then.
