Calzaghe v Jones - Analysis and prediction

TBH I'm hoping Calzaghe does win just so we don't have to put up with months of haters saying 'See, he couldn't even beat an old Roy Jones' which is invariably what would happen.

i expect him to put the pressure on, roy doesnt have the legs he is used to and his 20 punches a round wont be enough imo.

i expect Joe to aim for the body while jones is lying on the ropes, but I alaso dont see JC throwing a 1000 punches, he doesnt like counter punchers at the best of times so i do expect a few straigh right hand counters and left hook to land cleanly on Joe.

hopefull Calzaghe will take it easy in the first round and not get caught colad like he was with Hop.

A motivated Jones (which i hope he is tomorrow night) can stop Calzaghe or at least handle him pretty easily - and yes i say that even now while he is a shell of his former self. This "shell" still has what it takes to beat Joe C...

Joe pressures but he approaches slowly. He paws in with his jab and when he gets close enough he unleashes a his flurries. Now if these two are standing out of range of each other...Joe throws a pawing, measuring jab and takes a step closer, then another and another step closer. That is two opportunities right there for Jones to quickly lunge in with his lead right hand or jab. It's athleticism. Watch Jones or Floyd fight and this will become very clear. They have blinding handspeed but there ability to be out of range and then a split second later be in range and hitting you is what is truly amazing and sets them both apart.

 

What could happen and would completely change the fight is that Calzaghe will have trouble coping with power that originates from speed..

The reason RJJ showed he has good power throughout his career is because of the speed at which he throws his shots !

Now...if he can land most of his shots on Calzaghe, he will get Calzaghe's attention and throw him off his game a little...No one wants to step into a powerful shot they don't see coming !! That's what Calzaghe might find out Saturday tonight !! The fact that Calzaghe just loves to throw flurries...will leave him open to those quick and powerful counter punches and that might make him hesitate before throwing many more as the fight moves on...

 

Jones is right when he said what he said. Joe has never seen anyone in the ring like Jones. Joe doesn't do anything Jones hasn't seen, he just does it better then the other people Jones has fought....maybe :deal

 

I reckon Calzaghe on points, possibly late TKO. Calzaghe might be slightly slower than Jones, but his footwork should be much faster, if he's in trouble he'll be outta there fast. If Jones is in trouble however Calzaghe will be right on top of him.

As regards the right hand, yea, Calzaghe is a sucker for them being a southpaw, but he'll be wary off them the first few rounds (he won't want another Bhop situation). By the later rounds perhaps Jones will have missed his chance being too tired?

Again with Calzaghe being southpaw he should in theory be more effective with the jab despite Jones speed advantage.
