No he wouldn't have and I'm dead serious about this. Calzaghe wasn't even going to fight Lacy or Kessler if these guys didn't pack their own major belts, belts that **** on his, and made the flight. You think he would have fought Pavlik when he didn't really need to?, come on. He didn't want to fight top opponents in a division he was claiming to make a career and legacy in. It's really easy to see through without the need for me to mention this. The demands for the Lacy and Kessler fights were huge too yet they got postponed and ignored for as long as they did till these guys started to collect major belts in his division and made him look foolish. Kessler was actually unifying, yes he was unifying in a division Calzaghe thought he dominated at that point without the need to unify.

Exactly, the offer happened before Pavlik got settled at the top level. Catch them premature and cheap - thats Warren matchmaking for you. Once Pavlik really hit the top level Warren wasn't interested and matched JC up with Hopkins whose age was considered a big factor at that time.

One of the many worthwhile opponents in Calzaghe's career whom he could have beaten quite comfortably if only Warren didn't go for an even easier dead cert match.
Despite Calzaghe complaining about Warren's matchmaking now, the fact is he put up with it for 15 years while watching people like Hatton and Hamed leave Warren and prove that the big fights could be made.
He's got no excuse for his resume and he was happy to let it happen.

Jones is FAR, FAR more washed-up than Hopkins.

Presumably, one can justify Calzaghe on the same grounds.

Alot was made of Pavlik cause he was undefeated but, at the time Jones was still a harder fight than Pavlik. Jones was a faded force, but hadnt been beaten for over 2 years since Tarver outpointed him, and had come back with 3 wins against modest opposition and was a LHW.
Pavlik had only had 1 fight at SMW winning on points to Taylor, and made one defence of his MW title against poor competition in Lockett.
Pavliks a solid puncher at MW but as seen in his 2 fights at the higher weight, he isnt the same and with Jones being a LHW who had hurt one of Americas best recent HWs in his HW fight was probably a bigger puncher (the last thing a fighter loses is his punch, they say) and was still faster and more versatile than Pavlik.
A poll made as to who would win between Calzaghe and Jones had Jones a 60% favourite and alot of writers who didnt pick Jones to win thought it would be a hard fight, its just after the 1st round knockdown, Calzaghe took over.
Im sure there will be some backlash from this post, but I think Jones was still a better fight than Pavlik at that time and seeing how badly Pavlik was beaten by Hopkins just amplified this to me
