Thanks. I think it boils down to these main points. He is also vry awkward with his punches, and sometimes very wide with them. You'd have expected someone to figure him out and pick him apart by now. Hopkins did well to an extent and at some points made joe look like a crazy windmill. But, the way he held and bought for time with the "fouls" was a shame. He just couldn't keep up with Joe despite displaying some sweet crisp counter punching. He really spoiled Joe's work that night. Punch and hold. Punch and hold. I think this was one of the one fights where Calzaghe got flustered and didn't adapt too well early in the fight. He began to figure Bernard out though later on. The more times I watch it the more I fall on the side of the Calzaghe win. It was a very tough fight to score though and in some ways came down to your preferred boxing style. Joe Calzaghe was a great fighter and I don't get why more people don't "get" him.
Definitely Frank Warren promoting the majority of his career...he fought no name bums, and by the time he was able to promote himself independently, he was able to take on wayyy past their primes Hopkins and RJJ...Prime for prime, RJJ, B-Hop and Toney would've ko'd him in under 10 rds...
I don't know about that. I think Joe would have given them all a great fight. Certainly don't think he would have been KO'd. So many fighters mentally quit against Roy before they were actually beat. Bernard has gotten better with age in many ways. Joe would have beaten Toney on points in my opinion. Who knows though. Anything can happen in boxing.
Come on guys, lets try to be unbias here---it's cool to have nationalistic pride (as i know a good majority of the people here are from the U.K.) But seriously, calzaghe tasted the canvas on flash punches from a 43 year old hopkins and a 39 yr old jones---what do you think wouldve happened 10 years prior?? They would've absolutely walked thorugh JOe's slappy punch style and KO'd him..
You're right, as Nard has continued with his career, he's definitely become more ring savvy; but he's definitely not become better with age---look at bernard fighting Glen johnson about 10 years ago---that bernard was an offensive machine besides being quite crafty defensively..i'm talking about a Nard in that era and an RJJ around the time he destroyed Griffin....Calzaghe is a very good fighter, very unorthodox, but cautious matchmaking by Warren is the main reason he was able to stay undefeated!
10 years prior Joe had stronger punches cos his hands weren't held together with Brown paper and vinegar. I still say Calzaghe's head would have cleared just as fast and he'd have changed strategy and been able to give them a great fight. The Jones KD was sick though. His forearm caught Joe on the bridge of the nose. Bone on Bone and Joe just crumpled. Amazing recuperative powers to be able to get back up like he did.
