halfway through people like Direll and Kessler realised wait a minute with this consistent level of high opposition i may end the tournament with 3 losses on my perfect record and mess up marketability for the rest of his career... less than a year ago Kessler was going blind and Direll had brain damage... now both are fighting[/quote]

Hmmm.... that is a very intresting point. i hopt haey do consider doing it in another divison because it was wonderful to get an insight on all the different personalities involved and true elite fighters competing consistantly.

I think its great in theory but the reality has some flaws. In an ideal world you wouldnt need the tourament tie in and the best would fight the best. It seems a bit critical because it was a brilliant idea but. Maybe 4 fighters would be enough but then if that was the case i doubt Froch would have got in and he been a success story.

Ward v Green - Green not a top contender, outside the tournament could that have been v Bute / Froch.
Ward v Bika - Stay busy but safe, again could have been against a Froch / Bute.
Ward v Abraham - AA was shown his limitations so was not a top fighter v top fighter.

It has given us some good fights but the time taken could have been better spent if promotors and fighters agreed.

No, it wasn't done this time around.

Tourneys suck for boxing. Fans excuse it because we saw some good fight but we shouldn't need a bogus tourney for top fighters to fight each other. There has never been a truly successful tourney in boxing.

Showtime has had 3 seperate tourneys and all of them have had delays, cancellations and dropouts. The first one, the finals ended in a draw and we never got a rematch.

    yes but with changes

alll venues and money decided in advance

single elim because withdraws killed the tournament and the guys who withdrew were losers before they withdrew

maybe 4 or 8 single elim

or 6 with the top 2 getting advanced into the next round like the nfl playoffs

How could venues be decided in advance in an elimination tourney?
I do agree that a single elimination tourney is a better idea than a round robin though.

Like it or not, we got HIGH level fights with top contenders made, and any time that can possibly be done it should.

I'm all for trying it again.

    Agree.
Waiting several years for a tourney to play out is ridiculous.

The concept is brilliant but execution not so much!
Would be better if each fight was on the same card each time but then each boxer would earn less.

i don't see why they can't make another... obviously they would need to iron some things out. the experience of the first one will better prepare them for the next time.

i don't see why people have problems with the length of time it took to complete. fighters usually have 5 to 6 months between fights anyway... i've never found it to be a problem.

the question is, though: what division? and what fighters? will they want to be put through all that? if you're fighting the best for about 4-6 fights, it's going to take it's toll. unless your names andre ward. you can then fight at home, cheat your opponents, have all the judges you want, have a friend who can ref your fights, AND have the easiest route to the final.

but yeah, i wouldn't mind seeing another being done. can't see it happening, though.

    Would love a Super 8 in heavy Fury,Perez;PovetkinChambers,Johnson; Arreola;Helenius,
    and one out of Ortiz,Dimetrenko;Valuev,Pulev,Boysov,Solis

Cruiser too , but they have to pick the best not only Sauerland-fighters

venues can be picked in advance like all neutral locations then no home field complaints back yard judging or refs

if every fight is in vegas or atlantic city or berlin or something then you dont have to choose as it goes and complicate stuff

fighters from the inside looking out, fighters from the outside looking in. Stupid networks politics, there has to be another way to get top fighters to square of.

A more open tournament formula perhaps better then a round robin
