By defeating Miguel Cotto, Kermit Cintron, and Joshua Clottey. Mind you Paul Williams has campaigned at 154 and 160 pounds in his most recent bouts, with his next scheduled fight taking place at middleweight. Of course if the claims being made against Margarito are true, it changes everything. Three of Margarito's losses came before his 19th birthday while he was a boy fighting men. But it's odd you mention Margarito's losses, when defendinig Carlos Baldomir, a fighter who at the time had 9 losses along with 6 draws. Who's comparing Margarito to Chavez? Correction. It gave him the lineal title. That doesn't make him "the best." When Cotto and Clottey beat Zab, no one really rated their wins based on the notion that Zab had always been a hot and cold fighter, and a bit of an underachiever. So does Baldomir beating Zab at the time he held a title really make it that much more of a difference? Maybe to a sanctioning body, but at the end of the day, they still beat the same fighter, regardless. Sure, fight odds are not going to determine the outcome of a fight. But they are indicative of public perception. You say Baldomir became the "best" when he defeated Zab. Yet, more people expected Gatti, coming off a somewhat unimpressive performance against a completely nondescript fighter in Thomas Damgaard, to defeat him. Point being, winning the "lineal title" didn't make Baldomir the best in the public's eyes. If the accussations being made against Margarito are indeed true, then you just might have a point.
margo and baldo are not on the same level. It is an insult.........to baldo:yep baldo was on another level, way more skilled than margo ever was..sure he's not that a big puncher but at least he doesnt cheat and use plasters to be one:deal
Claims aside, Team Williams has openly told the media that they can still make 147. And Margarito was offered big money for a rematch (of a fight he LOST) AT 147 and turned it down. The fact that PW campaigns elsewhere is COMPLETELY irrelevant.
Margarito losing 3 of his fights before his 19 birthday mean nothing. The point I am making is that he is no where near as good as people were trying to potray period. Felix Trinidad was the WBC Welterweight champion at 19. Wilfred Benitez another personal favourite of mine was World champion at 17. Chavez and lot of Mexican fighters start their professional careers early. The point is simple he is game lad, big, tough and strong and keeps coming forward but he is slow and limited and not the indestructible force some people would likke to make him out to be. He would have lost the Clottey fight as well had Clottey not broken his hands during the contest a fight Clottey was winning until that point. Beating Cintron who he already stopped previously is no great feat. Paull Williams beat him in their match up. Williams did a number on him before they got in the ring and during the fight. I have no doubt that the stories about Williams owning him in the gym are probably true. I am not defending Baldomir but clearly pointing out that Baldomir had gone to the top of the Welterweight division by defeating the unified undisputed and linear World Champion Zab Judah who had stopped and taken the titles from Cory Spinks. PBF took on Baldomir to take the undisputed and linear champion which quite frankly meant more than Margarito's WBO title. Margarito and Bob Arum claimed PBF was ducking Margarito which is a load of bull. Margarito is an easy night work for PBF as Margarito's style is ready made to order for a sharp shooter and master blaster like PBF. As Julio Cesar Chavez use to say in his days what is a WBO? Baldomir just did not hold a title correction he held the titles that matter. I knew Shane Mosley would do a number on him and quite frankly Cotto should have done as well. I don't know if the accussations being made against Margarito are true however I do know that Cotto should never have lost to him.
