Hell no neither Morales or mab did more than canelo and neither were ever ranked p4p #1 and seen as the best fighter in the sport jcc I can see an argument but not the other 2
alvarez had a lot of great wins over quality opponents. wins in jr. middle, middle, super middle, and light heavy. he is at the least in the discussion of top mexican fighters. to dismiss his accomplishments would be folly. he is still active. he is chasing greatness. i like the attitude. personally as a fan, i would like to see him fight benevidez and a rematch with bivol.
He's top 10. You got Salvador Sanchez, Greatest Mexican boxer of all time as well as thr greatest Featherweight of all time. Carlos Zarate. Greatest Bantamweight of all time. Ruben Olivares, Vincente Saldivar, Juan Manuel Marquez, Barrera, Morales, JCC, Finito, Lupe Pintor, etc. A lot of great champions in the argument.
Thats an absurd comparison. Canelos P4P competition was a fading lomachenko, Spence, Usyk(before he beat Joshua) and a(at that point) unproven Crawford. Oh yeah and Inoue. MAB and Morales P4P competition was RJJ, FMJ, Pacquiao, Hopkins, Lennox Lewis, Holyfield(96-99), Mosley, Trinidad, Ricardo Lopez Im sorry but that era of boxing was just 10 times stronger than now. Canelo would struggle to make the top 5 p4p from the late 90s to mid 2000s The first 5 names are certified ATGs.
If he wins and Charlo Canelo is for me the No.1 Mexican boxer of all time. And if he loses, then he's not. Because who has Canelo lost to in his career? From FMJ, who (officially) didn't lose to anyone (and whether he was green at the time is another question), and from Bivol, who didn't even have to enter LHW to try out. But he still tried.
Chavez is number 1. There is just no argument to be had there. As dynamic puncher pointed out Canelo is 18-2 in world title fights, Chavez is 31-2 in world title fights. Chavez fought in a strong era where even contenders were highly skilled and had deep records. Canelo benefitted during a weak watered down era and played more of the negotiating games like weight stipulations, short training camps for opponents, locations, dates, etc. Not a fan of that stuff, but also don’t knock it in this era, just wasn’t as big part of the sport in the past. Now as far as everyone else. I like MAB, I like Morales, I like JMM, they had awesome fights against each other, Pacquiao and other notable names. I prefer watching them compared to Canelo, but I do think they fall short resume wise compared to Canelo. So I would rank Canelo above them. Anyone pre 90s I haven’t watched closely so I won’t comment on them, but the further back you go the harder it is to compare their accomplishments because the business and rules were rather different. 90s to today 1. Chavez 2. Canelo 3. JMM 4. Morales 5. MAB 6. Finito
I've heard several people say that if Canelo beats Benavidez he's he Mexican GOAT. It's always gonna be hard to top Chavez with over 100 wins and a career spanning 25 years as a pro. On the other hand, Canelo is 18 years into his pro career. But of course Canelo started his pro career much younger. 18 years into Chavez's career, he was 100-3-2, while Canelo is 60-2-2. So Chavez had 40 more wins, but 1 more loss, two of those were to De La Hoya. Chavez had also been knocked down and stopped by that point, while Canelo has never been down. FYI Chavez was 31-4-2 in World Title fights.
You may be too young. Canelo will never surpass Julio Cesar Chavez, Salvador Sanchez and Ricardo Lopez. That is no disrespect to him either but he won’t. To have had a chance he would have needed to beat Floyd which he could not do. He is definitely up there with Barrera, Morales and Juan Manuel Marquez.
