I felt that one could definitely have it as close as 6-4 to Canelo (and one judge did) going into the 11th which meant that a strong finish from Plant could make it really interesting. He was fading, though, so I thought it unlikely that he would, but I also didn't think Canelo would stop him.
Are there any reputable news media outlets that had this fight scored for Plant or even close???? Usually in a close fight there are at least a few boxing journalist that score for the fighter that was on the losing end of the stick. I have yet to see anyone that had it for Plant or even a draw at the time of stoppage.
I agree. Plant had started hitting harder and with better accuracy after 7th round. Actually I was surprised that he was KOed.
Richie Woodhall for BT Sports had Plant a round ahead at the time of the stoppage. I haven't read any "reputable news media outlets" concerning the fight.
As good as Canelo is, he really does look very beatable quite a lot. The only time I've ever seen him truly dominate a fight start to finish was against Smith who just didn't show up at all and looked so slow and sluggish the whole fight. You just get the feeling that he'd lose if he were facing better fighters but they just aren't there at 168 so far.
Thing is Ginger nuts can take his time and "lose" rounds while working out an opponent. He knows the judges will give him most of the rounds anyway. He's an excellent fighter but he does have that luxury of knowing he's always got some free rounds in the bank. And his strategy uses that advantage. He doesn't need to rush anything or do anything risky.
I thought Plant a poor , shades of Maywether , body rolls etc, to me he seemed to be pushing his punches. His body language demeaner from 6th onwards seemed subservient & the "Edge" had dissolved....BJS would beat him...
Same old same old then canelo gifted rounds blah blah. We must have been watching different fights because canelo did an excellent job with his defence catching a lot of shots on the gloves. Yeah plant put on a decent display and did have a bit of success landing straight down the middle at times but come on.. canelo marshalled him round the ring for 90% of that fight.
I can see why. I had it 5-5 going in to the the 11th. Canelo just kind of looked annoyed with being there, not so much befuddled by Plant. It was strange, I at no point thought Plant would actually pull it off though. I will admit however that was after a full day of watching college football, going to the symphony, and at least 4 bars/restaurants before coming home to watch the fight at like 3am. So take my scores with a grain of salt.
Both suffer the same fate Stacked resume but who stands out? Really takes quality opponents to show what makes you special Both are great fighters i can see exacly why Canelo performed that way, definitely not his best night but I will never overhype him like some
There are a lot of fans that don't understand what it actually feels like to be in a fight. Canelo was landing hard shots all fight even if they were not clean landing punches but that sort of thudding power round after round on the body arms and gloves takes its toll and eventually you are going to wilt.
Plant didnt just break down from stamina. He got broken down from some heavy shots landed throughout the fight and the physicality that Canelo was applying to him. The stamina issue definitely was crucial but it was only a matter of time before one of the bombs Canelo landed did its job.
Nerves are normal for people who are emotionally invested. Canelo was landing much heavier punches, always likely to be up on the cards as a result. Plant clearly didn't have the power to knock out Canelo and that kind of volume of heavy blows is always likely to create opportunities to finish it. Only one fighter was ever going to get a knockout in there. One was scoring more punches but the other was landing enough substantially more power to swing it - cards favouring Canelo made sense even without the expected bias in the mix. If Canelo fans were nervous, it's because their emotional investment wouldn't allow them to relax until it was over, not because the outcome was realistically in doubt.
Yep it takes someone equally or similar strength and power to be competitive with Canelo in recent years as he has not only developed in to a great boxer but a solid staunch powerful fighter only guys who can return the same type of fire power like GGG and to a lesser extent Danny Jacobs can match him. You can't just be a skillful mover anymore like Plant and BJS you need that fire power to keep Canelo from constantly just walking through the front door.
