Canelo proved to everyone he is well past his prime. Canelo in his prime was one of the best counter punchers in the game. He would come forward and when you threw, he would counter you in combinations. Canelo didn't counter at all tonight. Canelo just plodded forward with the same punch patterns over and over again and eventually Crawford caught onto them and started to counter Canelo and punch in between his shots. His hand speed is slower. His foot speed which was never great is much slower and he doesn't vary his attacks anymore. He's just a basic plodding fighter now who has a strong chin. I remember when people used to say Canelo was slick lol. Slick and this Canelo are not even in the same sentence anymore.
Canelo was not ever "slick" against top level competition and you so desperate to make it sound like Canelo was slick on say the level of a Benitez when he was not even close to that. He was very competent but people love to embellish things like his power or his defense and the simple thing is everytime Canelo stepped against elite competition he lost and in most cases he lost very badly. There was no "slickness" displayed or power bailing him out in any of those bouts. Canelo is great in his own way but he is simply not on the same level as the greats like a Leonard or Mayweather he is a clear step down from them.
No one said Canelo was slick like that at all (Benitez). What I said is Canelo used to be perceived as slick. There are literal highlight videos of his defense. Now if you thought he was overrated with his defense, that's fine. But I know for a fact that Bivol thought Canelo had great defense. I know Jacobs literally said Canelo was slicker than he expected.
Canelo is shot. He looked even slower than he has in the past and honestly while really good he’s never been great. Mayweather, Lara, Triple g, and Bivol can all claim they beat him. And the version tonight was a very clear diminished version of himself from those bouts. Honestly if it was a young hungry super middleweight that he fought tonight I think he may have gotten stopped. He should hang them up. His stamina while never great was poor, his upper body movement which is usually his best asset was a hair slow, and game plan was single pot shots to the belly and a far away looping right hand. As for Crawford he did what he had to do, but that was not some statement win like Pacquaio had against Oscar (also coming down in weight and looking diminished like Canelo). Pac-Man outclassed Oscar and stopped him. Tonight was a bit of a snooze fest. Unless you are a Crawford fan, you don’t walk away from tonight saying wow I saw something special.
Agreed. All respect to Bud but I think tonight was a lot about the continued decline of a past-it Canelo.
Thank God Bud rid us from the ginger serial-cheater. Now, Benavidez needs to humiliate him and punish him and karma will be complete .
Alvarez still has a pretty fantastic sense of anticipation, despite not having a great gas tank. The way he knows he can get away with that sneaking left hook to the body is brilliant. But his ability to put them together on a fighter of Bud's caliber...At least he can still dazzle on lesser names, I think. I wouldn't write him off of that. It's all in the context of fighting one of the best in the world.
I wonder if there's any fighter in the sport that Crawford could beat fairly and convincingly, and people would just give him the credit he actually deserves, rather than putting an asterisk next to it? I have done it before, but I don't know how anyone can do it after tonight. That was a magical performance, and anyone who found it boring or has found something to complain about, why do you even bother watching boxing? I don't get it.
Crawford had one fight at 154, where he looked pretty average. He then jumped up two weight divisions and boxed the head off the undisputed champion at 168. I'd love to know what your bar for "something special" is?
