Poor stoppage, Canelo clearly winning, but why stop it? Angulo could defend himself, entitled to continue...
I have mixed emotions on that stoppage, if the referee was that concerned he should have stopped it 4 or 5 rounds before that... 8 minutes left and he suddenly gets all concerned and jumps in, all that said Angulo was getting a beating and I am surprised Angulo stood up to that kind of punishment. I would love to see Canelo Vs Lara.
Agree 100 % he was taking punishment but no more than in the previous rounds, and he is a very durable guy...Alot of talk about the referee saving him from himself, but I really don't think he was in too much trouble, the cut wasn't too bad and he was clearly with it, slightly staggered by that big canelo uppercut but it's boxing, and I think the safety first approach by the refs these days is going to far... Sure jump in when a fighter is getting battered and clearly showing it, but not as some kind of presumptuous preemptive measure, surely that is what the medically trained ring side doctor is for... Take nothing away from Canelo, he was excellent tonight, and that performance will hopefully get him a bit more respect amongst the more knowledgeable fans. Lara's style is all wrong for Canelo imo, can see him going up to middle now, especially with his weight probs.
I just watched it, my first reaction was good stoppage, Angulo would have taken more punishment and he had virtually no chance of affecting Canelo, who could clearly take his best shots and was handling him easily. Virgil Hunter said in the corner he was only letting him have one more round if it stayed the same too, he was getting hit clean and hard. A lot. It'll be hard to take for Angulo 'cos no fighter wants it stopped like that but these refs and cornermen have a duty of care too.
