lol that "tomato can" was a champion and canelo fought him at his weight and knocked him out. no one in the us ever heard of liam smith outside hardcore boxing fans yet canelo still managed to draw 50000 fans and 300k ppvs, which was way more than i thought would sell. fans that didn't buy the ppv heard about the sensational ko and are going to want to pay attention when canelo announces his next opponent.

Yes they are completely different in some ways but lets not pretend there haven't been Brit villains. Mayweather as a villain wasn't unique. Many Brits hated Hamed they were a minority but he definitely had those paying to see him lose, same with Eubank Sr he was practically a Bond villain and he played up to this image because it made him money. Golovkin could do the same in the UK market.

Yes Mayweather was huge, biggest draw ever, numbers don't lie, but were not talking about Mayweather here really, we are comparing Canelo's drawing power to GGG's. Canelo is the bigger draw, number don't lie, he made $3.5 million as a minimum for his recent fights while GGG made $2 million vs Lemieux and $4-5 million vs Brook. So while Canelo is a bigger draw, he's doesn't dwarf Golovkin in terms of money earned.

Golovkin has options he didn't have before the Brook fight. He would still make the most money against Canelo and should get the smaller end of the purse but he doesn't need to go begging for scraps from Canelo. He deserves a fair cut not a flat fee like he's some nobody.

As for how Canelo would do in the UK against Eubank. Impossible to say, maybe he sells well, maybe even more than Golovkin, can't say until he does it. Golovkin/Brook was a risk for Hearn, there was no guarantee that fans would turn out of Brook against someone really only known by hardcore fans. Luckily for Hearn and Golovkin it worked, Brit fans once again showed what great sports fans they are and will always turn out for quality match ups.

I just think the comparison between Golovkin and Canelo is basically flawed, since Canelo has been groomed to be the Mayweather successor for the last 10 years while Golovkin has been relatively obscure.
I think it's a fair accessment to compare Golovkin's draw appeal to that of his past opponents, with Golovkin's appeal being closer to that of Geale, Murray, Wade, but less than his last opponent, Brook.
All of the above will naturally have less name recognition than Canelo Alvarez.

I'd argue that Kovalev now has more recognition and draw now, then before his fight with Bernard Hopkins, and if he beats Ward, the distance between his and Golovkin's recognition will get even wider.

I'm a big fan of Kovalev despite him beating my man BHop but I don't think he's on Golovkin's level yet as a draw. He hasn't headed his own PPV as the draw like Golovkin has against Lemieux and his purses suggest he isn't as big a draw. he made only $750K against Mohamedi. He needed Pascal's big Canadian following to make his biggest purse of $3.24 million and that's smaller than what Golovkin just made.

As for recognition I can't say for the US but here in the UK among people I have spoken too, I'd say Golovkin is more well known and that was before the Brook fight.
