Nah, Joe beats Toney on a 8-4 type of decision, that's as long as Joe didn't get careless like southpaw '2nd to Nunn'. People like Jones and Calzaghe are the worst style much ups for someone like Toney. They do things off the cuff, adjust extremely well and have too much foot speed for him. This is one of the easier match-ups to dissect.

If he had been able to stay focused and stay in shape I think that JT beats almost anyone in his weight class(es) past and present...
I'm not sure about that, I think Eubank's long awkward punching and footwork on his best nights troubles Toney greatly. Toney would decimate Benn though, he's made for James.
I am a big Nigel Benn fan and also a James Toney fan I would love to have seen them square off I think it would have been a war, but Benn would lose handily. I don't think JT - CE would have made for a particularly good fight...

I think he would have beaten Monzon , Hopkins and Griffith, maybe not Hagler but then again would not be that easy for Hagler and would not be shocked if Toney did beat him, not overating him , just think he is better than a lot of people give him credit for, considering he was not that dedicated through a lot of his career, if he had of been, dont think we would be having a talk like this,

And Toney's does? Nunn, Reggie Johnson and an old McCallum (who he never clearly beat) are Toney's best at 160. Hardly the stuff of legends, huh? I'd say Holmes, Johnson, Jackson, Trinidad and Echols for Hopkins, or something like that. I tend to look at the consistency of the wins and the fact he cleaned out the division. But those guys are the equal, or better, or many of Toney's wins at 160. I like Toney but the hype he gets is OTT for what he's done in his career.
no i agree and i wasnt meaning a direct comparrison with Toney, just playing devils advocate a bit. Hopkins does have the greater body of work and longevity with the manner of the trinidad win as a cherry on top to surpass a lot at 160 i think Toney would have beaten him though at their best all the same
Tough fight to imagine actually. Those writing Benn off.... pop Toney in with Mcllelon and you have a very tough fight to call. I think Toney would have been too active for Eubank and too classy for Benn but on the face of it Toney would be too classy for Drake Thadzi and too busy for Montell Griffin. One thing Toney wasn't was unbeatable. He was brilliant given time to work, or a fighter who walked onto his counters. But Thadzi and Griffin were not in the class of Benn or Eubank.
