Monzon was way too tough for Hearns. He would have roughed Hearns up much like he did Benvenuti, only the end would come sooner, like in 8 or 9. Too strong, and clever as well for Hearns. He would have taken Tommy's power well, but I believe Tommy would have fallen like a house of cards.

I love Tommy and mean no disrespect, but Monzon would bide his time, rough him up on the inside, and eventually wear him down and catch Tommy, and Tommy would be doing the crazy leg dance somewhere around the 10th round. Monzon TKO 10. Tommy would have his moments. His shot would be to get Monzon out early and that ain't happening.

    Monzon W15 Hagler, 9-6 ish

If there's film of Monzon being knocked out of his rythem and not dictating the fight for any length of time, I haven't seen it.

p.s. by "rough him up on the inside", I mean during clinches would would surely happen.

I don't think he was too clever, but I do agree with your Benvenuti comparison. I see Monzon taking the fight to him, particularly in close, and roughing him up to gain the edge, as he wouldn't be outboxing him, at least not early on until he'd started to wear him down.

Monzon would knockout Hearns. Not too sure Hearns' power could trouble Monzon seriously enough to stop him or have the alarm bells ringing. Thats arguable. I can certainly see Hearns' movement and stinging jab having reasonable success. But Monzon would get to him, and when he did the punch resistance of Hearns' would certainly be tested. Monzon's resume and overall experience would be too much for Hearns, who wasn't as accomplished at the weight.

    Monzon KO11.

monzon could take tommys shot and he could knock tommy out his rythem and dent hearns confidence by monzon shaking off shots. hearns speed would be nuetralised by carloses timing.

i think a late stoppage for monzon

hagler and monzon. ian an intriguing match up. i think monzon owuld try to keep him at range with his jab but would struggle to do so against a southpaw and hagler would get close to land his shots and hagler would box well as monzon came forward.

    hagler on points

Leonard hardly walked through Tommy's shots at welter. He turned his head at the last moment, thereby not allowing the full impact of Tommy's right hands to land on his chin. If Leonard had not done that, or had not been as mobile as he was, Tommy's power would have had a much bigger impact.

Monzon would not turn his head at the last moment and therefore he'd take the full force of Tommy's shots. Tommy's power at middleweight was not quite as devastating as it was at welter and Monzon had an excellent chin, so it's likely that Monzon will eventually wear down Tommy and stop him late rounds.

But, and it has to be mentioned, Tommy had the power to stiffen opponents and crack chins that were otherwise solid steel. You never know with a puncher like him. He destroyed an all time great durable fighter when he KO'd Duran and for that his power can never be written off.

What MW Challenger to Monzon, had Hearns' size, reach & power?

(Napoles, Griffith, Bouttier, Licita, were all pretty small)

Maybe Nino, but he wasn't really a big puncher.

I think Hearns matches up well here, better jab, faster, more athletic and better power. Monzon could rely on his 1-2 and its been taken away from him here. Monzon is the better inside fighter, rougher, good timing and better down the stretch in those late championship rounds. I'd say Hearns taking the early rounds and Monzon coming on strong, mid rounds onwards. I would expect a close UD that may well favour Hearns

I don't think Hearns can pull out this one.

Monzon, as ugly and boring as he can be (I hate him) is too strong and too tough for the shaky legged Hitman. Monzon is a slow, steady destroyed. I don't think Hearns can dent his iron chin either. Not a good matchup... He outboxes Monzon for first 4-5 rounds, then the demolition begins...

    Monzon by late stoppage.

Not Hearns' ideal weight but of course I'd give him a chance. Why not?

Tommy brings a world of class to the ring, a hell of a jab, tremendous power and at this stage is physically bigger and arguably stronger than Monzon. He also happens to be a world-class boxer with a lot of pedigree.

True, he lost to Hagler and Barkley but there is more to both stories than that. For one, the broken hand he suffered against Marvin who was adept enough to realise that his best chance was to rush Tommy and force him to fight.
He lost to Barkley after nearly breaking Barkley in half with body shots in the second, getting careless, and getting hit with a bolt-from-the-blue wild shot that he didn't recover from.
I don't believe he just 'got by' Roldan. He was staggered with a good shot in the third (or maybe it was the fourth) but he bounced the iron-hard Roldan all over the ring otherwise.

I don't know if Monzon's languid style would be ideal against Tommy, I really don't. I think Tommy would catch him with a lot of hard shots and if he plays it safe and doesn't go all cowboy, could win a decision.
Not the popular choice I know, but I really do feel Hearns has a chance here and is being written off almost without care.
