I mostly agree with this, but I think Chagaev defeats Moore and would be 50/50 vs Charles. Chagaev is rather short at 5'11" tall, and has just a 74" reach. Since he isnt quick with his feet, others with similar dimensions can beat him to the punch, or out maneuver him. Chagaev is really a tough guy. A technician type, and he can punch. Decent on defense and the counter too. I think Povetkin and Ibragimov would do better because they are bigger, longer, and much quicker.
Good post. I'd bump some of your 50-50 choices up to beaten, I think, but I agree with most of what you wrote.
For once, you might be right about this, although it's a little rough on Povetkin. Still, we can't expect you to make a flawless post on heavies Chagaev turned pro at 205lbs. I've seen these fights and it did make a difference. Obviously, it's impossible for Chagaev to be a force in the division at 205lbs, but he would certainly be one at that weight in 1950. I'm intrigued as to how that might have shaped his career.
Chagaev didn't beat anyone good. He got a decision against Valuev. Quite a close decision against an aging Ruiz. His win column reads like a who's who of heavyweights you've fortunately forgotten.
As it was Primo Carnera was already 260 lbs when he won the title and at 6'5" weighed more than Vitali Klitscko. So no. I don't think he'd train to be heavier today. My feelings are likewise for Willard who was 240 when he beat Johnson.
Pastrano lost to more mediocre heavyweights and light heavyweights than I can count on two hands. Chagaev has ONLY been beaten by hall of Famer wladimir Klitschko and world champion Alexander Povetkin. Both Olympic champions who weigh 225-250lb Pastrano lost to Brian London Roy Harris joe Erskine chic calderwood Alonzo Johnson Jessie Bowery Wayne Thornton in his prime. You think Chagaev would lose to any of these guys? Pastrano a claim to fame is getting a split decision over a 36 year old Harold Johnson, a fight where many including myself thought Johnson won. Pastrano was too small and too erratic to beat Chagaev who would have a 50lb weight advantage
yup Chaggy gets MULTIPLE destroyed and gives up boxing if hes in the 50s. in fact I doubt he'd pursue a career in boxing back then, even if he was from the west.
Chagaev was one of those heavyweights I really wanted to amount to something, but he never did anything. Maybe I fell for the "White Tyson" tagline.
