IF all of our fantasy fights came true, I believe there would be many surprises and upsets. It's too hard to compare eras. So, to me it's not a crazy fantasy that Tubbs could outbox Liston....he was big, quick hands and feet, with decent defense. However, having said that, in matches like this it is just too much of a stretch to pick the underdog. Of course most people will pick Liston. It just seems a safer bet....much better record. I pick Sonny. But I won't laugh at anyone who picks Tubbs because I don't think a victory by him is that outlandish an idea.
Oh geese, back on the med's pal if you actually believe the rarely close to being in shape Tubbs would have met the seventh round against Sonny.
His twin brother from another mother... Greg Page, but just barely. He also won a close decision over James Smith. He lost close decisions to Tim Witherspoon and Riddlck Bowe. He decisioned a very faded Jimmy Young. He won a decision over Orlin Norris but it was changed to a NC because Tubbs liked his weed. He won a decisions over Bruce Seldon, Jesse Ferguson, and Alexander Zolkin... then he was stopped in the 1st round by the white Jimmy Ellis. Later in his career he lost close decisions to Jimmy Thunder (I'll never forget his Mom giving her opinion on the decision and Zolkin (in their rematch) before getting stopped inside of 3 rounds by Brian Nielsen. Who can forget his 2nd round KO loss to Mike Tyson? I just can't see him beating Liston, and I pick against Liston a lot.
You must either be Tubbs or smoking right w/ him TO even think fatass Tubbs lasts more than 2 w. Sonny is insane. Tubbbbbbbbbs was almost decapitated by Hill and would have been ko'd right away if Hill followed up. HILL!
I used to love watching tubbs he was so fast and so fat it looked weird add to that mix his jerry curl hair brilliant.he looked a bit like fat Larry from fat Larry's band.I think his speed would give liston problems but sonny would catch up with in about 8 rounds.ps that hair spary stuff is it still available .if it is I might get some.
Tubbs was very slick, but his chin wasn't the best I think Liston knocks him out after falling behind on points.
The Smith decision was not close. The Page decision was fairly clear cut, as well He outboxed Norris, who was considered a top 10 guy at the time. The problem is he got flattened by a few mediocrities and couldn't even last 2 rounds with Tyson Liston's power would be too much.
