Besides his undoubted (though occasionally exaggerated) ability, era/timing helped. Sugar Ray beat the lightweight champ twice but they were non title bouts and could easily have been lightweight, welterweight and middleweight champ over the course of his career. Henry Armstrong got shafted too otherwise he'd have won the middleweight strap and held 4 out of the original 8. He is special, no question. But his achievements are taken that extra level

Do most SFW’s have great power at WW and look good there? From SFW-140 should give enough evidence of what JCC could do.

Do most past prime greats, above their natural weight usually fare well against naturally larger prime greats in fights?

This does not seem like a fair or balanced question or line of reasoning, anymore than the 154 Duran comparison was

Hi all, I love prime Chavez as a fighter but nobody has mentioned the fact that Julio was always a bit of a sucker for a right hand and Duran had an all time great one. I know Julio was past his prime but Randall and Tszyu both decked him with straight right hands.

I reckon Duran had too much physical strength and speed for Julio but I would deffo back Chavez to go the distance as he was a great and proud champion. Duran by UD or very late round stoppage.

    Cheers All.

Come on now. We're comparing him to Duran. Who was able to.
It was a fair question. It blunts the Chavez argument.
I'm not gonna say Duran doesn't get overrated on the site in general. In this particular thread the Chavez side is being more irrational or emotional this time.

Both good points. I was wondering if someone was going to mention Armstrong and I didn't even think about Robinson but you're right. With that said taken at face value that's pretty much two other guys in history. That puts Duran in rare air regardless. So if his ability gets exaggerated it's not by that much

C’mon, please don’t tell me that you find your logic in this post a rational thought track? In this circular logic, it goes no where and draws no valid conclusion. I only had to think for 7.3 seconds to figure out that Erik Morales beat a prime (or very close) version of Pac. Could Morales jump up in weight and do what Pac did... absolutely not and I doubt any Morales fan would disagree. The fact that JCC might be able to beat Duran has nothing to do with how he fared at 148 2 weight divisions up...this is not logic. I am not a fan or either guy, but this contrast is useless

Yeah, he lost one in his prime... like Sugar Ray Robinson lost one and like Willie Pep lost one too.

No-one is saying Duran did everything better than everyone ever in boxing (as you well know). But people are saying he did things better than Chavez, a fellow all-time great, which isn't unreasonable. And that Duran did certain things as well as anyone in boxing history isn't a stretch either. We are talking about an all-time p4p top 10 fighter in most people's eyes.

Chavez, as great as he was, isn't quite at that level.

Duran worship here is crazy though.
Was Duran really a defensive master at 135? I always thought once he moved up in weight he became better at that.
