Chavez was better at slipping punches than Duran? No way.

Yeah if you were to break down all their attributes then I doubt chavez would outstrip him at much. Duran was the harder puncher but I do think that Chavez threw more.

Not a good matchup for Chavez. Duran does everything better and then some. Wide points at 135 or 140, and you're talking to a Chavez nuthugger here.

I think thats harsh personally. Chavez AND Duran had trouble with slick boxers who moved Benitez, Leonard, Taylor, Whitaker.

When Chavez went into a phonebooth against Rosario the effects were pretty devastating, so to say Duran does everything much better is exagerating IMO. Chavez was a precise power puncher with an ATG chin and stamina.

Duran has the edge in power and defence, and is the better outside fighter. But would Duran be able to resist going toe to toe with Chavez? Duran was put down twice by de jesus so lets not pretend he is invincible. However he went on to beat the living crap out of him.

If he goes toe to toe its a pick em, chavez has more compact punches IMO. However duran is the better rounded boxer and if he plays to that strength he takes it.

With all respect, it doesn't appear like you know much about Duran. he's better on the inside as well. How I being harsh? I'm being truthful, I'm sorry if my viewpoints don't support one of your favourites.

As previously noted I'm a massive Chavez fan; I'm also a realist. I think Duran at LW would've done the same thing to Rosario, but even more comprehensively.

    Chavez-Top 30 P4P of all time.

Duran-No.2 on my list (which is POST-WAR and therefore does not take Langford, greb, Fitz etc etc into consideration)

I'm not saying that Duran wouldnt have beaten the **** out of Rosario, but what i am saying is that the fight would have been cometitive is Duran chose to fight Chavez on the inside. If he uses his jab to break Chavez's rhythm and fights an all round fight then he defeats him 9 - 6 or 10 - 5

If he goes toe to toe though then he would have been tested to the limit.

Did Duran ever fight anyone as good as Chavez at lightweight?

No, it wouldn't. Duran was a fantastic inside fighter in his own right. What you're saying is that the fight will only be competitive is Duran uses one aspect of his skillset. You're about right there.

Ken Buchanan was as good a LW IMO, if not a similar style to gauge with. Put it this way I think DeJesus would've given Chavez as tough a fight as he gave Duran, if not tougher. Regardless of the KD (watch them both, Duran is charging into DeJesus's punches and gets straight back up both times) this says nothing about Duran's chin.

For the record, Chavez lasts even less time with Hearns, even at 147 IMO. As you said Chavez had great stamina and ATG chin it's almost like you're saying Duran didn't either.

Well duran was a far better figher up at 147 and hearns is a terrible style match up for both of them.

And yes Duran had a great chin and stamina, but chavez's chin was crazy. He wasnt off his feet until the randall fight. However he wasnt fighting punchers like duran was of course.

If you take the Duran of the buchanan fight then yeah i think Rosario Chavez is very competitive. At that time Duran was a brawler and not the all round fighter he would later become. Whats your take on a fight between those two versions then?

    You're contradicting yourself.

Rosario was a puncher however. Bigger than DeJesus IMO.

I think the version of Duran that beat Buchanan would still beat Chavez. He threw as many punches and from better angles.

I also think you're selling Chavez's outside game short. He was capable of throwing mean shots from mid-range, his right hand ebing his best punch IMO

Im talking about duran losing by KO to Hearns. Chavez NEVER faced a puncher like Hearns and so he didnt have his chin tested to that extent. However he did take many flush shots from De la Hoya.

And yeah i would agree that Rosario hit harder than De jesus.

Personally I think it was after that first loss that Duran really started to develop all the aspects of his game. Before that he was ALOT wilder, and like you said that right hand of chavez was hard, sharp and precise.

However, the first DeJesus fight was a ten rounder. Duran came on strong in the later rounds in both subsequent rematches.

Basically, we've gone off on a tangent now:lol:

    Let's agree to disagree. :good

Great matchup, although I feel Duran wins both by decision. At 135 it's a tremendous, all-action fight with Duran always a bit ahead, at 140 it's a more comfortable decision for him.

I pick Duran at both. He would have outslicked Chavez. It would have been a hell of a fight at either weight.
