Park just can't pace himself here, gasses in the middle of rounds and comes out strong at the beginning of the next and gasses again. Fully Obel is able to pick his shots, keep it at range and chips away before blasting Park down to the mat.

Decent enough fight. Just over the limit. Fully Obel got a second fight with Hagler because of this (and Park blew his chance) and Hagler DESTROYED the Venezuelan second time round.

Chong-Pal Park 11-1-1 (10 KO's) vs. Kenji Shibata 24-6-4 (14 KO's)

Kenji Shibata a long-time Japan Light-Middleweight Champion, OPBF Champion,
and one who gave Eddie Gazo a hell of a battle in September 1977 for the WBA Light-Middleweight Championship.

Chong-Pal, still only a 19 year-old, gets out-boxed early, then drops the southpaw
Kenji with 'one-punch' in Round 5, for a 'knockout'.

It was an OPBF Middlweight Championship defense for the South Korean.

He may not of been the best, but without Park for better or worse, there would of been no Super Middleweight division. His run as IBF/WBA title holder helped establish the division for the first time (after previous failed attempts), and gave the foundations for Leonard, Hearns, Benn, Eubank, Toney, Jones et al to take the division to the next level.

Because of this, Park deserves, for the moment, a place in everyone's top 10 of 168lbers of the modern (1983 onwards) era; for being the 'Father of the Super Middleweights'.

 

He probably could sneak in a top 15 or 10 anyway.

H2H he wouldn't do brilliantly IMO. A fair few with a decent whack at 12 stone.

 

I put him in my top 10 Super Middle's just because he was the "Father of the Super Middleweights". From whatever I've seen of him he seems limited but exciting to watch fight.

I've always been fascinated by the fights with In Chul Baek and Fulgencio Obelmejias. Never saw any of it until recently. The fun part about youtube is watching all this stuff I read about 25 years ago.

OPBF Middleweight Championhsip

Chong-Pal Park 18-1-1 (17 KO's) takes on Japan's Caesar Sasaki 14-0-0 (7 KO's)

Caesar Sasaski, a 23 year-old 6' 0" 'boxer-puncher', with hands so fast and quick,
that they call him the 'The Cyclone'.

The Japan Middleweight races through the early rounds with lighting quickness,
out-speeding the stalking Chong-Pal, until....'one monster right hand' in Round 6.

Note: Had Caesar Sasaki won, they were going to match him up with former Middleweight
Champion - Alan Minter for a bout in Japan.

Chong-Pal Park stops (KO 9) Sang-Ho 'Tiger' Lee in another OPBF Title defense.

Chong-Pal goes to 21-1-1 (20 KO's) by stopping the southpaw 'Tiger Lee' 23-1-2 (17 KO's)
in an all-out 'South Korean War' at Munhwa Gymnasium.

The San Francico/Oakland Group tried to get Chong-Pal to come to Oakland, California for a September bout
versus Erwin Willimans, a highy-regarded California Middleweight.......

But 'No Go'

 

He had hand problems, and frankly there wasn't much domestic interest in him as a pro prospect even without his hand issues.
