Should be some interesting reading. I can't wait to see the bull**** that comes out of this... how Quarry was quicker, more skilled, a better counterpuncher, tougher, stronger, "naturally" bigger, a harder puncher, more durable, etc.
I can't see Byrd hurting Jerry, but he's fast enough to take an unspectacular but clear decision from him.
Eh? Not sure what your beef is here. Quarry is most likely stronger and the harder puncher, he probably isn't winning though. I've found this forum rightfully favors Quarry when he's matched up against a more limited big man or slower puncher, as he beat those types frequently. But if he's matched against a faster, better boxer the forum majority usually goes against him. I actually think this topic has even been done before with many picking Byrd. Or maybe that was Jimmy Young...
Well here's the Young thread.. http://www.boxingforum24.com/showthread.php?t=361164&page=2 Most people are picking Young in this one, and even the Quarry arguments are well reasoned. Interestingly, Hookie complains about how overrated Quarry is in that thread too. Really I would say most of Quarry's fans on this board have a pretty realistic outlook on his abilities and the type of fighters he could beat. So I really don't get the beef here. Now the Ike Ibeabuchi and Dave Tua fanboys, they are the ones you have to look out for. I don't see many Quarry fans passionately aruging he would dominate Dempsey, Holyfield, Marciano, Lennox Lewis, Wlad, Mike Tyson, or Joe Louis..etc.
I don't understand how anyone would say anything negative about Jerry Quarry. The guy was skilled, he could punch, was a leading contender for years at a time when it meant something and he always gave it his all.
Quarry was a tough guy and sometimes fun to watch. On this forum he is extremely overrated though... if you dont see that than you must be overrating him as well. He gets the benefit of doubt every time it seems. Every year he seems to get quicker, stronger, punches harder, his counter punching and elusiveness has really improved over the years as well. Quarry had some skill but when he fought the best he got the shlt beat out of him plain and simple. Chin and heart? Sure... he still got stopped 6 times and was down a fair amount... some of you act like getting stopped on cuts doesnt count against you or something??? Guys like Lyle, Bugner, Bonavena, and others did much better than Quarry did against the like of Ali and Frazier. He gets too much credit for the win over Lyle... Lyle improved after the Quarry fight. Norton? Sure, Quarry wasnt at his best but there is no reason to think Quarry would ever beat him.
You know boxing as well as anyone here and you didn't see Quarry as all that, all fair enough. I would argue with you that Lyle didn't show much growth the rest of his career, he had already beat the prime Middleton, lost twice to Young, and beat the end of career Ellis and Bonavena afterwards. Both he and Foster were close to their zenith when Jerry beat both undefeated's. I think its unlikely he would have ever beat Norton but its like comparing the Ali of the Berbick bout, you have no reason to be throwing the end of the line Jerry into it. Fighters get cut, he wasn't like Henry Cooper in that way, most think the Ali cut was from a head butt and the Frazier bouts were going to be stopped by a beaten up Quarry indifferent to cuts. Bugner fought the post Foreman Frazier and I watched it live, Bugner didn't do much better in any way shape or form against the slow and pudgy Joe but last the distance. Joe was not Joe anymore and admitted he held back when Bugner was going down. All I'm really saying is you know boxing well enough to put up abit better arguments.
Thanks... I guess. Quarry wasn't my cup of tea, but he was a fan favorite and tough as hell. I do agree with the comment, "what's not to like?" I just think some people go to far with Quarry for some reason. I don't totally get it, but that's ok. I'm a big Gatti and Ward fan... so I do understand it some. So, where do I rate him among the 70's HWs? Ali, Foreman, Frazier, a young Holmes, Norton, Young... then it's close between Quarry, Lyle, and Bugner in my opinion... then Shavers and the rest. Nothing to be ashamed of.
Byrd was very quick and cute, but I can't help envisioning Jerry hurting him with a counter or two and winnning either by a tko or decision. Young, on the other hand, was a much more elusive fighter than Byrd, and though his offense was not as prolific, Jerry would have been frustrated and outboxed all night long.
Young would have won by a landslide vs Quarry, and I'm a fan of Jerry's. I guess I'm an even bigger fan of Young's, but I know I'm right.
Byrd would be to quick and slick for Quarry. Seems that Jerry always had problems with quick fighters. I personally can't stand Byrd, but I'll give him his due.
Byrd was very elusive, very fast, and a southpaw. He was very durable. He beat Tua by decision and took his punches well when he was able to land. He was dropped twice by W.K. but lasted the distance in their 1st fight. V.K. Didnt put him down, Byrd won by stoppage. He won decisions over an old Holyfield and drew with Golota. He took good shots in these fights. Quarry wouldnt stop Byrd and there is no way he's outboxing him. I think Byrd would be a nightmare for Quarry. I think Byrd would win every round and even stop Quarry. Quarry wouldnt go down but the ref would have to stop it because Quarry wouldnt be able to see very well... too many unanswered punches TKO8 or 9.
I don't see Quarry stopping Byrd. Byrd is elusive and has proven to be durable when caught, surviving against big punchers like Tua, McCline, Golota, Wlad..etc. But I can't see Byrd stopping Quarry either. Byrd has never stopped anyone of note nor has he even cut anybody up severly. Quarry was prone to cuts but he wasn't that fragile, he managed to go the distance twice with a still really good version of Patterson. Anything can happen but I don't see any reason to pick Byrd by stoppage. Ali and Frazier cut and busted up guys all the time. Byrd never did that. And don't get me wrong, I favor Byrd here, but I wouldn't make him a comfortable favorite either. Byrd was made to look very bad against Oquendo afterall. Quarry could do the same.
I dont see whats so great about Quarry, he was a contender in a great era, but thats it. He got beaten big time when he faced the top men. He gets alot of credit for his heart, and sure he was no quitter, but there has to be more to a great fighter than that. Byrd should take this one.
