the best fight i've ever seen. that still doesn't do it justice . it had everything , the best and the worst of boxing
i'm pretty happy eubank has been given a good share of respect in this thread. when i saw the thread i was expecting a complete Toney would whip his ass style scenario. If only we could go back 15 years and pitch these two together............ wembley stadium, the garden
cheers man, yeah well its the first fight that got me hooked on boxing, not 100% if its my first ever seen fight, it cant be far off it though! must have been something being a fan of that era of british boxing, something special.:good
Agreed, his best weight was definitely 168. The best Toney we ever saw was against Barkley at 168. Nobody in boxing history beats that version of Toney easily. (even Roy Jones would have a much harder time)
Eubank was such a character, I remember before the first Benn fight he refused to look Nigel in the eye until the night of the fight. The pre-fight interviews on ITV were hilarious, the interviewer Gary Newbon didn't have a clue what to make of Eubank whereas Benn just sat there glaring at the back of Eubank's head. I think a Toney-Eubank fight would have been very tactical and might not have been great viewing, no way could I see a stoppage either way, a real 50/50 match-up. The second Watson fight took something from Chris and whenever he had an opponent in trouble he would often implore the referee to intervene. A golden era for British middleweights, and a real shame that great fighters such as Watson and Rod Douglas got injured (same goes for McClellan).
check the video on youtube....Eubank v Benn best of enemies.... they're on the Jonathan Ross show and Toney makes an apperance via sattelite link from that actors (forgot his name) Gym.... what follows is some of the funniest boxing build up ever. Eubank IMO had a fragile mind.... and that interview with Toney shows it along with others e.g. his clash with Naz pre Carl Thompson fight or the famour Collins hypnotist scenario..... For that reason I would give Toney an Edge if he could get into Eubanks mindset.... if Eubank is focused and not affected by Toneys big gob.... Then I would favour Eubank on points.
Toney would win and convincingly in my opinion. Toney fought 6 times in 1991 including Michael Nunn and Mike McCallum who he drew with but I thought Toney was ripped off in that one. The best fighter Eubank had fought til that point was Nigel Benn who was in no way the sweet scientist Toney is. Toney by a late TKO or at least a 116-112 type of scoreline for me.
