Cobb was a funny guy and not a bad fighter. He got torn apart by one of the very best champions of all time but before then he beat some pretty good fighters. He gave a very good fighter Ken Norton who was well passed his prime but still in good shape a very tough fight, he also gave a young and very talented Michael Dokes a tough test. He beat Bernardo Mercado who wasn't bad at all an a passed prime Earnie Shavers. Cobb wasn't fast of hand or feet but was a very solid guy who could keep a good work rate its impressive to me how well he did with his abilities as a boxer. Do you guys think there was any champion in history Cobbs plodding attack could've been trouble for?
Randy "Tex" Cobb was one heck of a spontaneous quipster, much like Max Baer. I remember seeing a telecast or a tape of Cobb sitting on a stool and saying something to a round card girl in between rounds, resulting in the girl laughing so much than her body was shaking. I can't think of a famous fighter's child who was a worse professional fighter than Josh Cobb, a son of Tex. To put it mildly, Josh didn't belong in the ring. Baer also had a tendency to say or do something which was funny or memorable in just about every setting. There was a story about Baer and Primo Carnera were down on the canvas at the same time during their bout with Baer saying, "The last one up is a sissy!" Another story was about Baer talking about Jim Braddock on the radio. Baer said something about Braddock had children, adding that he (Baer) didn't have any that he knew of. - Chuck Johnston
Remember when Tex played Mark Breland's manager in Miami Vice? I think he ad-libbed a few of his lines. As memory serves Don Johnson sponsored Breland for a time
He's doing great I believe Wasn't too long ago he went to college to study Sports Management. He legitimately passed the course Magna Cum Laude. The Dean said he acted just like any other student & he worked his butt off. He had no special treatment whatsoever
I met him and hung out with him for a day about twenty five years ago and let me tell you he is bananas and can be seriously scary. Warm and cuddly he isn’t. He was a real potential tear a bar apart nut job. I filmed over fifty people for different boxing projects , many , many fighters and he was a one off. Believe it or not the second scariest was Edwin Rosario a few days before the Camacho fight …
An old friend of mine hung out with Tex in Florida and said he had switched from booze to weed and was really nice. For some reason I tend to believe your version.
Keep in mind my time with him was in about 2000 so he was in his mid-forties ... He was very guarded, more than a bit skeptical, had that crazy laugh that went on a touch too long while his eyes didn't laugh ... don't get me wrong, he was ok but you just felt he could really go off ... I remember someone was mentioning martial arts and he threw a kick by extending his huge booted leg just a few inches from a guys face ... let's just say his role in Raising Arizona was not an all time stretch ... he very well may have mellowed out with age and a change from booze to drugs ... Another pal of mine used to be a top sparring partner for Chuvalo in the late 60's and early 70's ( he actually fought a very young Larry Holmes) and he told me some terrific stories ... one was when he went on a cross country drive with Chuvalo, Jerry Quarry and Boone Kirkman ... he said Chuvalo was very non-confrontational where ever they went but in every bar they ended up stopping in Quarry would belt some loud mouth out ... He also told me about that time, 1969 or so , he shared a training camp that had Foreman in it and while they never sparred that the young Foreman was a real nasty piece of work ... at lunch time he'd cut everyone on line and be ready to kill anyone ... people forget just what a hard man Foreman was and what he morphed from ...
Dude, brilliant insights into Cobb. Thanks for sharing. Re your IVs with various fighters, any chance you’d ever commit those to some sort of compilation?
I'm not even sure I have them anymore which is a crime but possible .. I had a tone w Larry Holmes, Gerry Cooney, Tex, Carl Williams, Renaldo Snipes, Tim Witherspoon, Aaron Pryor, Tim Witherspoon and a bunch of others ... I'm going to see if I can find na copy off the doc , I haven't seen it in ten years at least but here is a clip that's on Youtube This content is protected
I wonder how Randall is doing these days? I don’t mean to forecast anything bad but of course he took a lot of punishment during his career. At any rate, I hope he is doing very well. You don’t necessarily have to be a great fighter in order to be a great asset to the sport. Quote? To Chevy Chase in Fletch - “Ben Dover!”
Also in The Comedy Raising Arizona you can see he’s a pretty big dude. His quote about Shavers was pretty funny too. “If there’s anyone that punchers harder than Shavers I’ll just shoot em”
