Particularly when they start myriads of them and still have bulk threads on page 1.

People's lack of understanding of the old timers classic era. 1880 to 1920 is 40 years. No-one would expect Larry Holmes to be mixing it with Fury, Wilder and Joshua. Boxers aged back then as well and had primes, a lot kept fighting into their latter years out of necessity but that didn't mean they could still mix it with the elite and a lot were fighting well over 100 fights in their career not to mention exhibitions, a lot of them were shot. Some did have remarkable long careers though like Sam Langford.

Those who use quotes from over 100 yrs ago professing Dempseys greatness.

Similar to the Wright brothers with their first flight.....there was very, very little to compare it with....same with Dempsey.

Skip forward to present day and it all sounds rather silly.

    • Time machine fantasy fights. There's way too many of them. Fighter X vs Fighter Y at their best. Even in the real world it's rare that ATG fighters meet when they're both at their best. The concept is so implausible that I rarely read the threads. Now, "what if's" that involve two guys who could have met at a certain time, that's different. I can get into speculating what would have happened if, say, the Ali-Bonavena fight would've come off when originally planned in 1967.
    • The misspelling of names. It's bad enough in the mainstream where you frequently see "Mohammad Ali." It's "Don," not "Dan C0ckell." It's "Emmanuel Steward," not "Emmanuel Stewart." It's "Riddick Bowe," not "Riddicck."
    • Regarding names, I'm going to go off on a non-forum tangent here. I recently saw an article someone posted on Facebook about Arlington Cemetery. It was at interesting article and I learned some things. Problem is, I'm not sure if the facts were correct. Why? Near the end of the article the writer listed famous people buried there. One was "champion boxer Joe E. Lewis." Who is Joe E. Lewis? Turns out he was a comedian who died in the early 1970s who is buried nowhere near Arlington. If something that easy to check is published, I question the credibility of the rest of the article. How does this tie into the forum? Sometimes people post links to stories with similar errors.
    • Bad grammar, spelling, and punctuation. But perhaps that's the teacher in me. So I try to let it go. But sometimes the mistakes I see just floor me.
    • The citing of Boxrec's Ring Annual Ratings to prove a point. A) A lot can change in boxing month-to-month, as we all know. B) Most of those ratings, at least at heavyweight (my area of "study"), are incorrect and are not from the issue of Ring Boxrec says they are.
    • The credence many give the sanctioning bodies.
    • Calling people by a single name, assuming that everyone else knows who you're talking about. I mean, usually when someone types "Frazier" we know they mean Joe Frazier, not Marvis Frazier, Larry Frazier, or any number of other Fraziers. But you have to be careful. If there's a fantasy fight thread that's simply titled, "Holmes vs. Frazier," I'll click assuming it's about the Larry Holmes vs. Marvis Frazier fight. Another... "Is Floyd an ATG?" "I'd say so, but it's unfortunate that he fought in the era of Liston and Ali." "No, Mayweather!" Be more specific.

I`m with you. It`s all about his tough guy image. I say Arguello was better in every respect, even at lightweight, in terms of heart, quality of opposition, boxing ability, punching power, and success at higher weights. Then we can talk about how he was easily outclassed by Benitez and Hearns, and of course Leonard. I do respect rhe man a a fighter though, especially after his game effort against a past his prime Marvin Hagler.
