I have him at #2 closely behind Muhammad Ali at #1 but have absolutely no problem with anyone who has that order reversed. Ali and Louis are probably interchangeable for the title of " greatest of all time".

Indefensible. Dempsey's title reign was largely contrived and goes down with the Black Sox as one of the greatest travesties of sport.

It took Louis 18 months to defend his title 5 times.

It took Dempsey 7 years of ducks and lollygagging to do the same.

    Number 1 heavyweight.
I'm not sure why anyone would imagine him as "weak" head-to-head either, but that stuff is all conjecture.

I don't see Joe as weak H2H.... I see him with flaws that other ATG can exploit, ( And they did)

He has been my number 1 based on how many defenses, fought the best, rematched tough fights, was the sole claimant to any title Heavyweight Champion of the World, he was the best power punching combination puncher of all time. Exciting and great variation of punches, Also fought all sizes, shapes and colors

You can debate to some extent where he sits, but it is hard to see how he could have done much more to make his case in the ring.

He holds the records for length of title reign, and number of defenses, and half of his professional fights were against people ranked in the top ten.

He fought every size and style of fighter imaginable.

His resume doesn't really have an weakness, except perhaps that his prime did not overlap with another top 10 heavyweights.

I say Dempsey kos Louis inside 3 rounds therefore I rate him higher ,if you disagree I am naturally devastated, but I'll just have to become reconciled to it.:|

h2h I do believe it's ok go rank Dempsey above Louis prime-for-prime (though I think Louis was even better).

Two points, one of them technical.

The window where Dempsey was in Louis's class seems to me to be very short, whereas Louis was lethal for years. Even if you are going h2h, surely it's fair to say that Dempsey would tip over at some point and in two mirrored careers, Louis would beat Dempsey more than Dempsey would beat Louis?

And technical, I think people who are ranking head to head should state that. Yes, every time they post rankings. It's the source of more mis-understandings on the site than anything else.
