    Respectable, classy, entertaining interview.

We get access to a side of Toney that most people don't get to see, outside of the confrontational guy we are accustomed to.

Its pretty sad that this man at 39 (?), out of shape, and a former MW is America's best current HW imo.

Wish he would take some of his own advice when giving advice to aspiring boxers too

nice post. good eye on digging this up. i hadn't seen this interview.

i don't neccessarily agree that toney is the best american heavyweight, but i do think it is a sad state of heavyweight affairs when an aged, shopworn former middleweight who ate and drank his way out of being one of the truly elite boxers of all time could give any american heavyweight a hard night's work.

i would say that toney's veteran cool, ring generalship and surprising ability to move, despite his girth would carry him to easy decisions over young prospects like chris arreola, kevin johnson and jason estrada. none of the american prospects have a lick of technical boxing skill or meaningful defense.

i think, probably, that tony thompson and eddie chambers would probably be a little to much for toney to handle at this point and would see him losing a unanimous decision to either.

It was the last fight of Chambers that made me make the claim. I would agree with you based on ability. But it rarely comes down to just that in this sport. He is not willing to open up or let his hands go. And he may be more of a front runner then Toney.

Why in the hell is there music in the backround during the interview.......

.....I listened for a couple of minutes and then I just shut it down.......

.....if its an interview, I think it outright disrespectful to have music in the backround throughout the whole damn thing!:-(

When the cameras are shut off Toney has always been a friendly and funny guy - as long as you're cool with him of course. Not what you would expect. He's kinda hot-tempered, but really a nice guy. And he's doing a lot of charity work, especially for autistic kids, and frequently visits young amateur kids in gyms, encouraging them and giving them counsel.

Nice interview from one of my favorite fighters. If you've ever met James in person, you know he's a good guy. All the crap talk is hype.

I did appreciate the line where he informs young fighters to "do your road work."

agreed. i met him once, quite by chance, at a steakhouse in hollywood florida. i was kind of like, 'oh don't talk to this guy, even if you approach him with admiration and respect he's gonna tell you to stop interrupting his dinner and slap you.'

in any case, i risked it and went over to the bar to talk to him and he was a terrifically nice guy who seemed to genuinely appreciate that myself and the two buddies i was with had been such ardent fans over the years. on his way out, he even stopped to say goodbye and chew the fat about boxing. cool guy, so unlike his flash and fury press conference mode.

I would love to see Vitali or Vlad fight Toney, either would knock him out.

I fully understand it is not James Toney's job to be nice or say "the right thing", and may be trying to provoke them into a fight. However I would not call that commit "classy"
