Cleverly considering retirement

Crossroads for clev, needs to sit himself down and decide if he really wants it or not. Think the university degree has held him back if i m honest, when the tough times come would be easy to take option b. But giving nathans talent i think it would be hard to live with yourself if you just walked away from it all. He can come again, needs better match-making and as one of the above posters said could do with adam booth in his corner (very under-rated). Vince should be proud of what he achieved for getting nathan this far must have been doing something right but if he wants to go onto the next level it's time to get someone a bit more experienced involved. Vince himself should be first to admit that after saturday.


Still big fights and a great career for clev if he still wants it, still think the fans put too much pressure on promoters and fighters to fight the best a bit too early. Everybody been questioning clev for a while now, i think because most people knew when he fought the best out there he would be taken apart like he did on saturday night. It's almost like we want to see it happen. We knew he wasnt elite but not many are thats why it's called elite but there's a few big wins out there for him if he's matched the right way and gradually built up as opposed to slowly built up then look nath we've got this killer russian for you to take on...you'll beat him no probs lol.


On another note i know i ll be slated for this but dont think i ve seen it mentioned...but what are the russians up to...came from no-where and suddenly punching harder than every one else in the world...sounds suspect to me, anyone know of their training methods??, are they training differently or could there be foul play going on??. Not trying to tarnish anyones achievements, but think we should be asking these questions when we're seeing very impressive results as such...

 

He held a world title, so it should be expected for him to fight world class opposition, you can't have it both ways, marketing him as a world class fighter and getting him to fight cans.

Golovkin is from Kazakhstan and not Russia and just because you haven't heard of them doesn't mean that they have come out of nowherere

Golovkin certainly didn't come from nowhere - he was Olympic silver medalist and amarteur world champion. I think he beat Andre Dirrell at the Olympics too. Kovalev didn't have quite the same amateur career, but I'm pretty sure he was national champion at least.

Both are 100% relaxed in the ring and have excellent technique, that's where the power's coming from. It isn't as if they're roided up like Larry Olubamiwo and getting the power from size.

 

Madpupp, I dont understand why people dont get that marketing and the actual truth are two different things. Boxings a business like any other, the promoters their too promote their man and why shouldn't they, your going to get a few untruths ;-). It's more aimed at the casual fan, surely most people on here that know about boxing knew that clev would come unstuck against a higher lever operater?? Why do some of us want to see it happen so badly because he claimed to be a world champion. Cleverly wasnt ready for a challenge like saturday night...so why put him in there in the first place...massive risk for me especially as not many had heard of the guy. You think that they've made a risky decision because of the pressure cleverly's been under to fight a lively body and it's backfired on them. World title or not he wasn't ready for that probably won't ever be but at least keep him ticking along upping his opponents gradually and getting them at the right time.

Yeah i ve heard of both fighters Golovkin more than the guy from saturday but was aware of how dangerous he was, but still got to question these power hitters from kazakhstan, russia or wherever. where's this power coming from...are they training differently?? Are they just born with more power over there - i don't think so.

GJM yeah i m aware of golovkin...i think you could be right about the technique thing and the being relaxed, tyszu was a bit like that if i remember correctly could generate good power much the same sure he was from that way as well originally.

 

He should retire and put his million or million's to good use, he has not got the pop at top level, Nathan has had a good run as world champ 6 defences, now time to use his brains, good luck to Nathan.

The time to have been gradually increasing the level of opposition was before he got a world title. Granted, if the opportunity comes for a vacant world strap before you are at that level then you take it, because at the end of the day it's a money business. But once you have that belt you can only milk it for so long before a world level opponent comes along. ****** should have been putting him in with fighters that allowed cleverly to attain something close to that level before he had to face a legitimate threat. They had 6 oppurtunities to raise the standard of opposition and give clev a fighting chance once he faced someone at world level and they didn't even bother.

Saying all that I don't think anything they could have done in that space of time would have won Nathan the fight against kovalev, he will always be too good for cleverly, but he would have put on a better showing.

 

Agree with most of your post london, but the six challengers cleverly faced weren't that far off his level, it wasn't like he was bashing them up and sending them home finished the same way the guy from saturday has been doing. He was beating them but he was working to do so. He was ready to up it just not that far, world champion or not why put him in with someone he wasn't ready for only going to have one outcome. Especially that it wasn't a mandatory. Maybe just underestimated kovalev or over-estimatted cleverly. I could see if it was something like hatton v mayweather wher e hatton had been beating some decent names for a while and they've went all in against against an established champion with a big reputation. But we've all questioned how good cleverly was, then we've all asked ****** to put him in with guys a good bit above his level. If we thought he was ready for it why are we questining him so much??

Yeah agree solaris, i think cleverly does come across as arrogant at times, but we're criticising price for not beileiving in himself enough and then we criticise cleverly for being too arrogant. I think you've got to have that if you've got any chance to succeed in the game. Who knows saturdays defeat might be the making of him, always thought a defeat would have done him good, doesn't seem to have the hunger needed for it, for me, probably not a defeat like saturdays though to be fair

 

But what do you do when people are turning on you for fighting nobodies, calling you a paper champ etc etc etc. I bet you've been one of them like most of us have that have been calling on cleverly to fight a higher level of opposition probably higher than his actual talent at the given time. He's took that challenge on lost emphatically and then we've criticised him and his team for taking on said challenge. These guys can't seem to win. Think we're getting too caught up with the marketing of the fighters and maybe turning against them a bit when we should be getting behind them and not trying to rush them in there with very good fighters above there level. Not everyone can be the best fighter in the division, doesn't mean we can't support them and still have successfull careers and maybe get there with a bit of luck one day
