Are there any fast handed 6’4 235 pound southpaws on Spinks’ resume to gauge how he’d do against a guy like Sanders?
Again, we agree to disagree, sanders has the ability but only showed it once vs Spinks who operated at a higher level through out his career. You pick sanders, fine by me.
He was also smaller and possessed significantly less power and chin (at heavyweight). And he might even have been slower. Corrie pantsing Wlad can be easily argued as a more impressive win than anything Spinks has at heavyweight too.
This is all fine and good... but 90% of his career was at light heavy. At heavyweight, the Anything Can Happen axiom of boxing grows a 1000%. It's not so much if Sanders can land a lucky punch, rather it is if he can steal the momentum early. He threw punches in bunches and tended to overwhelm his victims rather than coldcokk them. If he gets Mike on a roll, I don't think it stops until the ref intervenes on Corrie's behalf. The question is, does Mike have the skill, temperament and physicality to not get caught in the whirlwind? Against a prime and focused Sanders (which didn't often materialize), honestly, I do not know.
Spinks UD. He would use angles and flurries to outhustle the fast and powerfull but straight ahead and poorly conditioned (usually) Sanders.
Spinks is simply more talented and smarter than any of those guys. He used proper nutrition and conditioning to bulk up to 215. He also moved well and knew how to execute a solid game plan to suit the opponent. I actually think Sanders would have a better chance against a version of Holyfield who liked to trade than the very high ring IQ Spinks. After Spinks survives early he dominates late.
I really have to learn to edit and put together a video displaying Sanders' boxing ability. At his best he was anything but basic and straight ahead and he had good mobility and stamina.
