I LOVE Nazim too... To me he would be the perfect piece of that puzzle but since he trains SSM I don't think that he would accept the job.
manny can certainly be a much better trainer than the one training Cotto right now. He can actually teach Cotto some new things and make a good game plan for the fight.
I dont think he has too much on his plate right now. Plus he wouldnt take on a fighter he wouldnt be able to spend time with. He pretty much only works with elite fighters now, and they fight about every six months, so he could easily divvy his time up and combine training camps. He usually has Andy Lee with Wlad in training. He could easily coach Lee and Cotto together and have them work with each other. Steward also acknowledged Cotto needs to tighten his D up a little, so Im sure he would be addressing that. The offensive stuff would be covered so tightening up his defense would be easy I think.
Stwart is a great trainer and everything for him comes off the jab which nuetralizez speed. i just think cotto wouldn't be a good match . Now Goosen i feel would be perfect.
Cotto needs a psychologist more than a new trainer. Help him find the eye of the tiger again & find that old tenacity he had pre-Margarito. The Cotto that showed vs. Judah & Mosley... i would love to see that Cotto vs. Pacquiao and how Manny reacts to the left-hooks to the body! Just like with Hatton, fact is... you can't teach a lion to move like a leopard so quickly. Though it would be easier with Cotto as he was developing the 'boxer' side of his developing boxer-puncher game up until Margarito. Footwork is key here vs. Manny & unfortunately.. he won't be able to get it down well enough to out-maneuver Manny on the canvas. Manny will keep his lead right-foot on the outside of Cotto's lead left-foot all night & fire away with straight-lefts & his now refined roll-R.Hook tech. Flat-footed Cotto has but a puncher's chance. The Cotto of old (not even THAT long ago), though, dammit... i know i keep repeating it.. but i want that Miguelito!
But thats the point though. He did not improve those fighters very much. If at all. Thats a very bad sign for a trainer. He did not teach them any defense whatsoever. When Cintron fought Margarito, Steward was in his HBO chair before Cintron even got up from the KO... Im not here to say that it was all his fault but... I just think he has too many things on his plate. My thing is this. Cotto is offensively gifted enough as it is. There are things he can do better offensively, sure, but he is up there. For him to be at the next level, however, he will need to learn to break down a fight on the defensive end. Steward cant help him with that.
Cotto needs a new trainer for sure, I'm just not sure if Steward is a good fit or if it's a good time. I don't know if its good the switch trainers going into the biggest fight of his career. If he's going to train with Steward he needs to have a tune up fight with him first, a fight where they can get comfortable with each other in the training camp and fight together and not worry about losing the fight against a dangerous opponent. Look what happened in Wlad's first fight with Steward, he got KO'd by Lamon Brewster. Cotto is comfortable with Santiago because Santiago doesn't try to change the way Cotto fights. I think Steward would try to make some changes in Cotto's style and that takes time, its not good to do that going into the biggest fight of your career. Steward could make Cotto better but not in one fight, if he switches to Steward now, it could hurt Cotto more than help him.
I like COTTO but I do not think stewart is the right guy for him, STEWARD is not aggresive as he once was, not the right match up...
i'll repeat. He needs a psychologist more than a better trainer! He's lost that spark. That tenacity. Eye of the Tiger, mayne. He's been a little gunshy ever since Tony broke Cotto... not been the same Cotto since.
