It could backfire or it could be a spectacular victory for him. Most people seem to think he's the underdog anyway so if he loses it's no big deal, he could still possibly fight Canelo or others and even if not, he's had a great career regardless. If he wins, it's an amazing achievement.

Dayum Farmy.....whatcha growing out there, and are you selling summa dat sh!t.....

Yeah, GGG would murder him, and just about every LMW/MW, and most SMWs too.....but Martinez hasnt murdered anyone at Cottos level. NO ONE.

Alvarez......who the f has he fought that is gonna bring the fight right to him, and drill him without being KOd early.....

Yeah, Kirkland would hurt Alvarez, but Canelo could KO him with a rangefinder jab. Cotto has an solid beard, even as a MW.

Cotto vs Martinez/Alvarez/Sturm/Quillin/Molina are all 50/50 fights. He can win another title so long as he avoids guys like May/Pac/GGG.:think

There are so many what ifs in this fight. I say 50/50 fight, even with Martinez's advanced age. He's still a bad motherf*cker, and the best middleweight around! :D

I like both, but I'm rooting for the old dog. Get that W, Martinez!

Winner "should" get Canelo but we all know it doesn't happen that way.

The only thing in Cotto's favor is the long layoff that Sergio has had since his fight with Murray. It's going to be over a year since Sergio's last bout by the time he steps in the squared circle with Cotto.

Martinez has better footwork, better handspeed, is a better counterpuncher and is just naturally the bigger and stronger man. I'd expect Sergio to stop Miguel inside of 9 rounds, unless Maravilla is very rusty/shell of his former self at the time he take on Cotto. Sergio is no spring chicken and this long hiatus from boxing to recover from his injuries could come back to haunt him.

Big question is IF!! Well what if hes not??

Im gonna keep it real, Cotto goes gonna burtally KO martinez!! it doesnt matter if hes 100 healthy or not. Martinez has never fought sombody like Cotto. He keeps his ands down all the time, reason why hes been knockdown plenty of times. At MSG?? NO WAY MARTINEZ WINS!!

At least $2000 on Cotto by KO

You make some valid points here tough i disagree with the footwork mostly because cotto is awesome at cutting off the ring while simultaneouly applying the jab to throw off a less structured fighter. I think Martinez will have almost every physical advantage however he rarely uses his traits to the best of his abilities, pop shorting keeping your hands low and bending at the waist giving up any height advantage won't help his efforts vs cotto. Martinez is a more accomplished and less predictable version of Carlos Quintana they have similar styles that rely on their ability to weave in and out of trouble and scoring without being backed into a corner where they truly depend on their fast twitch abilities. This fight will boil down to style and if cotto proves durable enough to withstand Martinez counter punching while attempting to make his way in where cotto's hooks can play a factor then it will be a long night looking similar to the Chavez bount though with cotto finding his range earlier in the match.

Lets not give him too much credit as to why he is taking the fight now. Keep in mind on how Martinez looked in his last previous outings and how Cotto looked in his last. They feel momentum is on their side and against Martinez at this juncture and thats why they want to take on Martinez.

Thing is, I don't expect Cotto to be coming forward for very long. At some point, I think early, Cotto will realize that Sergio's power and handspeed is too much. Combined with bigger and stronger. We'll get the Sergio leaning in with his face and hands down, trying to get Cotto to commit, as you said, but I think it will be effective. I think he knocks Cotto out.
Gotta give Cotto credit for balls.
