The catch weight is clearly about getting a mental edge on Margarito and nothing to do about being fair. Which is why they would agree to a 1pd catch weight when the fight was in jeopardy.

Damn...Margarito will be weight drained. It should be 153 1/2.

It's obvious why weight classes exist. But if that's your stance, maybe you can explain why when you weigh 147.1, you are considered a Jr MW. Weight classes cover a SPAN of weight, not just one weight, that being the max.

When you weight 147.1, you are over the welterweight limit. If Cotto or Margo were to weight 153.1, they would still be goddamn light-middleweights. If a fighter wants to come in far underneath an established weight limit, that's their business. But it should under no circumstances be contracted that both fighters need to do so.

Weight classes these days are pointless. It's well established that belts are pointless. If you disregard them, there's no point in established weight-classes as no-one seems to follow them nowadays. As I've said before, you may as well get rid of belts and weight classes - just pick a weight to fight at, and sign the contract. That's what boxing is nowadays - the belts are merely decorative.

You can impose your own rules, but if both fighters can agree to a weight, then that's none of your concern really. And no, weight classes are not pointless. With all the talk of catchweights, there aren't even really that many fights w/ them. Just a topic that has become overloaded with guys who hate a fighter. Really, how many catchweight bouts have we had in the scope of ALL fights? 5%, if that, over the last several years?

I agree with you on belts though.

5% is 5% too much. Outside of the novice ranks, there is no good reason for a catchweight fight. I don't give a damn about the individual fighter(s) involved, if you can't agree to have the fight at an established limit, the fight shouldn't happen. Catchweights are nothing new, they've been happening since the 20s. But they were a rarity, and thus tolerable. Now, it's a joke - and these manufactured, *******ised fights are big part of the erosion of boxing.

You say weight-classes have a purpose. What is it?

no 1 pound doesnt mean much but it shows something mentally

that cotto needs something to boost him mentally or to just throw of margo a little bit

it probably shouldnt effect margo making weight its jsut a way of messing with him or giving cotto some kind of mental edge

i see it as pretty dumb that he needs to get motivated by playing with the rules

This is almost as bizarre as the 150.5 lb. catchweight of Norris-M.Taylor

When exactly did Margarito earn a shot??? WTF is all this crying about catchweights and mental edges...he is nowhere near a mandatory. He was bigger than miguel as a ww and he is gonna be bigger now.Cotto is nowhere near being a natural JrMW.

There is a possibility that marg might try to overcompensate for that 1 pound and walk in the ring bigger and slower then ever tho.
