117-111 Floyd here. Anything tighter than 116-112, and you let your imagination run wild when you should've concentrated on actual details.
I was at the fight and scored it 115-113 live but was obviously influenced by the pro-Cotto crowd and also thought that he was landing some of the shots that Floyd was blocking on the ropes. Watched the broadcast last night and scored it 117-111. Good fight and respect to Miguel for bringing it.
I think I gave Cotto 4, or 5 rounds at most, but thought Mayweather pulled away in the last 4 rounds.
Finally got around to scoring it: MC FM 1. 10 10 (Floyd lands a few grazing rights and solid jabs to the body in the first two minutes, while Cotto lands a showier pair of right hands against the ropes towards the end, and a few little body punches in the clinches; can’t pick between the two. If forced to pick, Cotto’s right hands looked the best punches of the round by the slightest bit.) 2. 9 10 (Cotto gets some good body work in against the ropes, but Floyd’s right hands make the difference 3. 10 9 (Cotto lands multiple power jabs that snap Floyd’s head back, lands a solid pair of rights in the middle, and good body shots. Floyd lands some accurate punches but misses a lot and fails to land as significantly. 4. 9 10 (Floyd lands a series of right hands around Cotto’s guard; some are blocked, but some solid ones get through on the top of the head, and Miguel doesn’t answer until the middle of the round; he catches up a little bit with 1’s and 2’s upstairs & some body shots, but Floyd gains even more points with a few right hands and uppercuts to close the round.) 5. 10 9 (Very difficult round to score; they were about even in the first minute, until Floyd started gaining points with his right hand; on the inside, Cotto started landing numerous body punches, and Floyd’s combinations were mostly hitting gloves. Cotto landed two flush left hooks at the end of the round that made me edge him by a hair, despite Floyd looking to have the higher output at range. 6. 10 9 (Clearest round for Miguel so far; multiple power jabs early and solid body work. He effectively evades Floyd for the last minute, aside from one counter-right, but besides that all effective work was Cotto.) 7. 10 10 (Extremely difficult round to score. I hate giving even rounds; if I had to pick a winner, I’d go with Cotto on landing the two best punches of the round to the body, but Floyd threw more, despite landing on mostly gloves. Low output from both leaves little to pick from.) 8. 10 9 (Cotto’s round; Cotto started strong in the first minute, though Floyd closed the cap with his series of consecutive uppercuts; Cotto continued to hammer to the body to land the harder shots, and in the last minute, was strafing Floyd with jabs more than any other punch against the ropes, while Floyd didn’t offer much in return.) 9. 9 10 (Floyd’s round, comfortably. Besides a power jab thrown as Floyd attempted to pull-counter, Floyd did all the effective work in this round throwing at range.) 10. 9 10 (Floyd’s round again; controlled the pace and landed many more shots throughout the first 2 minutes; Cotto landed some good bodyshots and a solid uppercut at the end, but Floyd put enough points in the bank with rights to win it.) 11. 9 10 (Floyd’s round; Cotto closed the gap in the middle minute, but Floyd just landed too many right hands.) 12. 9 10 (Clearly Floyd’s round, as everyone saw Cotto hurt and hesitant to exchange.) Final Score: 116-114 Mayweather
118-111 All these close scorecards are stupid. ESB complain about corrupt and stupid judges, but having this fight "close" on the scorecards is absurd. Cotto won 3 rounds maximum.
:thumbsup Similar to my thoughts on most rounds. I'm going to watch it again today with this sound off and score it. I'll post the update card.
