He looked good tonight (and he looked slow and ponderous against jennings, incidentally). He kept disciplined, didn't gas after four rounds, used his jab consistently, tried for the hook when it became available and, the first time he landed it, it finished Foreman off. Which was on its way to happening anyway. Does it not occur that Yuri's knee buckled from the pressure of fighting Cotto. He was moving, getting caught, his legs would have been weakening and, finally, he just crumpled. He was brave to keep going when his body was failing him, but Cotto was the architect of that whole thing.
Cotto hasn't been the same since margo.... I knew cotto was a class above foreman and would win, but the killer instinct of cotto is gone.....steward has just polished cotto's overall basic skills, he really can't show him new tricks at this stage of his carear...
Alright I'm confused here......Cotto fought a smart fight, and Steward specifically told him to stay calm and not go all in like an idiot, but u see this as a problem...Cotto was listening to his corner for the first time in a looong time......That's not a problem in my opinion...It's actually an improvement.
It actually looked like he was doing more damage before the injury. Foreman was lunging in aggressively allowing Cotto to counter. The injury sort of slowed things down and Cotto cautiously finished it.
Look man. Cotto is still a decent fighter. The issue is that he has flown too close to the Sun. I really hope that ES can develop his rear straight, but man mentally? He just isn't the guy he used to be.
Gave Yuri too much respect? Avoid hitting the body? He was running and jumping around for Cotto to get him to the body early. It was the other way around, Yuri gave Cotto too much respect early on. Jim Lampley says: He is getting more aggressive on Cotto, RJJ said, no he is just petrified and has to fight now or to something in that area (not word for word due to too many beers). RJJ was too funny tonight. Great courage and much respect though for Yuri.
he fought smart, but he was overly cautious. He let Foreman get brave after the first couple of rounds and made the fight more competitive then it needed to be. He showed a real lack of body work, which I thought was going to be key, and he didn't press the attack, which again I thought would be part of the gameplan. Just a strange overall performance, but a decent win nonetheless.
Seriously? Jennings? And before that loss Jennings had done? I will tell you... NOTHING! Jennings was a "local" UK fighter. He was supposed to blast Jennings out! IMHO, Cotto showed signs of being shot against Clottey. You are right though. Pac just added to the damage. I guess we can all agree that we are happy that Cotto got the win. I didn't even see it because I was out all day. I just hope ES can keep him on a steady course of improvement. :good
Actually MIguel fought exactly like he used to fight early in his career.......SMART... with the WIN and KO coming instead of going out there looking for a KO. This is Miguel's game to methodically break a man down round by round with smart boxing around the Corley fight he got away from that due to TV pressure to put on more exciting fights. He started getting into brawls to excite the fans. When Cotto fought Corley he started that style of brawling and attacking and throwing caution to the wind.....prior to that fight he fought exacty like he did tonight.
Cotto was toying with him. He could have ko'd him in the sixth or seventh but just wanted to take his time cause he was having fun. Kinda cruel but hey....it's what I love to watch
To be honest...I thought he looked good tonight. The only reason we didn't see him go to the body much was because of Foreman's movement. I can't remember seeing Cotto trap Foreman up against the ropes or in the corner before Foreman's injury. Cotto worked very well behind the jab, and his movement looked good aswell. But like you said...we'll have to see what he looks like in his next bout.
Im not saying that he is the same or not, but anytime you fight a guy that is taller, faster and has better movement than you well you have to pressure him and make the few punches that land count, and I think Cotto made his punches count. I thought he did great. He beat a champ and that is enough of a confidence builder to get him close to where he was 2 years ago.
