Duran’s thumb in the eye was key to that victory against Barkley. Intentional thumb in eye. Makes things a little easier for the little man.
I love Duran and Hearns two of my favorite fighter growing up. I just think Hearn is all wrong for Duran in terms of reach and height. It doesn't mean Duran could never beat Tommy. I think if they fight 10 times Tommy wins 7-8. Tommy was vulnerable himself so it's if Duran can start quickly and put some damage on Tommy's long torso then he has his own way to victory. It's like in MMA with Cormier v Jones. Jones length and limbs just create too many problems for the shorter Cormier to overcome. So bad syle & size match up for Duran
Uh,,I think you mean the Davey Moore fight. Durans keys to victory against Iran was his skill and right hand
I need to revisit the fight (thanks!) but you are right, Moore. That was a blatant thumb to the eye by Duran. Either way, young Tommy was all wrong for Duran. That fight was easy money. No excuses about getting up to 190 pounds before the fight for Duran. He’s like 5’7” and was very undisciplined during that time. Easy money for Hearns. He took more punishment in light sparring. Brutal And beautiful KO by the Hitman.
Maybe 1 from 100? Love Duran, imo he is the goat of the last 50 or 60 years. However, Tommy is a horrible matchup. His jab alone would always give Duran nightmares, never mind the devastating right hand
1980 Duran from the Leonard fight was the last version of a prime Duran ATG Roberto Duran, passed that he was only a good fighter no capable of beating Elite opposition. The Duran of Montreal knocks out welterweight Tommy Hearns, passed that Hearns wins at 154 lbs and above every time.
There was no thumb in the eye that the announcers mentioned, nor that I recall having watched the fight live at the time as well as several times thereafter.
One of the many things we can agree to disagree on. Tommy owns Duran. Too big, too skilled and too strong. He sparks his punk ads every time. Wish they met earlier, easy money for Hitman.
Duran could've beaten anyone from LW to WW if he was fully switched on and up for it. Incredible fighter.
Could yes, as we are talking about a all time great namely Duran However would he have ever beaten Hearns, i would say no unless Hearns had a bad day. I just see Hearns as being Durans nemisis, that is not disrespecting Duran, just some opponents are nightmare ones for you, i think Hearns was that opponent. for Duran.
