People are acting as if Holmes was some head to head monster, and he simply wasn't.[/QUOTE]
I think he is a head to head monster, a top five all time heavyweight, and I would pick very few heavyweights to beat him . Rocky Marciano not being one of them.

Sorry the underlined is just nonsense, the stylistic advantage is patently with the bigger, faster, more skilled Holmes!

I would attribute Holmes's greatness more to his consistency, than his head to head ability.

Head to head, I think that he was pretty beatable.

He never proved he could ko a ranked 6' 3" 212lbs prime opponent with real power ,or that he could take that power,so the jury is still out on that.

You are implying that a classic boxer would have a stylistic advantage over a swarmer?

    This is manifestly nonsense.

Yes I agree. Holmes did very well to convey his disappointment whilst remaining calm. What is also interesting to me is that at that time he doesn't complain about the losing the decision.
In later interviews he disputes the judges decision and accuses them of being drunk and all sorts. However in the immediate aftermath of the fight, the 'jock strap'presser, he has no complaints. I always found this interesting.

Holmes is accused of lacking class in that interview just coping with the bitter dissapointment of losing a close decision. The one who lacked class imo was Marciano's brother who tried to turn the post fight interview into a heckling match promoting his dead brother.

Larry must of been spitting feathers inside I think he did well not to blow his top.
After all those defences still living in Ali's shadow not getting the credit he deserved all A lot of people cared about was he didn't beat the record.

When did Johnson ever prove he could take beat a 186 lb heavyweight champion with real power like Marciano?

I must have missed the part where Sam Mcvea was heavyweight champion of the world. Do you mean the Sam Mcvea who was 18 or 19 all 3 times he fought Johnson? That was also in his 7th, 10th, and 11th outings in professional boxing?

Obviously I don't know who would beat either of them.

My point would be that Holmes was not particularly dominant vs the best he faced (relative to say Louis Ali or Tyson), and the best he faced was not all that good.

This leads me to think that his trick was more consistency, than being a head to head wrecking ball.
