Could Sugar Ray Leonard be top 10 fighter of all time?

When it comes to just rating how he looks on film then? I'd say there are other guys up there as Robinson, Duran, Whitaker, PBL, Pac etc, but I wouldn't have any of them clearly above him. How about you?

 

He beat Duran easily in the rematch and rubber match. Once he did not fight Durans fight. He beat Hearns in the first match, regardless of I agree Hearns beat him in the rematch. I think Ray beat Hagler. Hagler lost those first two rounds which was a big momentum thing.

 

You do realize that duran is naturally smaller than Leonard right.

 

Ray Leonard was terrific but top five all time ? That's a tremendous ranking ...

 

When it comes to rating how they look on film :think I would rank him even higher than 6 -8 he might be top 3 or 4. He looked better than Whittaker or Pac on film as far as hth goes. Who is PBL?

I got him top 15. I think the lack on longevity due to his numerous retirements and his delays in giving guys rematch doesn't help. Great resume though and a very special talent.

Around 15 is definitely about right. Some great individual wins but he does lack a bit of depth to be placed any higher.

A great talent though and a joy to watch.

He is in that mix and has the resume one of the best of the last thirty years.

 

He's in the mix for 8-15.

No, not close to it. not enough quality wins. Never faced prime Hagler when the pressure was on and didnt rematch Hearns. Never faced the version hagler faced. Didnt do well against Norris. You need higher standards SQ

He has some phenomenal wins packed into a very thin resume, in his Welterweight days he was a dominant champion, albeit not for very long, and then after that he racked up some quality wins and one great win.

At Welterweight he established himself as the top man, I put alot of credit into this. He didn't beat the man who beat the man etc... He made himself the man by beating Benitez, Duran and Hearns. That is three All Time Greats, so it is fair to say he established himself as the man in a great division.

Aswell as having these great wins in his Welterweight days, he had wins over Green, Ranzany, Price and Sheilds. Who were all good contenders in this division at the time. Also he had a win over Junior-Middleweight champion Ayub Kalule, who was a very good fighter.

After his long lay off he got the amazing win over Hagler, even though the time suited Leonard and he got 'his way' with it abit, it is still a phenomenal win. Hagler was thought to be almost non-pareill atp his Middleweight throne and the fact a Wekterweight coming off a real long lay-off could beat him was abit absurd. Even though I thought Hagler won the fight, you have to give Leonard the respect for fighting the fight and acquitting himself very well against a bigger ATG.

I do think the lack of depth hurts him in his overrall career, for example after the Hagler fight he dosent really build on it with good wins, and this hurts him overall but his Welterweight reign was brilliant, if breif. And he should be considered one of the best boxers ever, top 20 at least.
