'The Natural' acknowledged Coleman's extensive wrestling background but felt his superior clinch will be the key factor in the bout. "Of course coming from a freestyle background I've got to look out for takedowns from the outside, particularly a single or double leg takedown but in the clinch I think have an distinct advantage and that's where I plan to take this fight." "I'm going to be looking to get in the clinch and to wear him down physically, even if it means staying there for a large portion of the fight, he's improved his cardio significantly but I don't think he will be able to deal with that constant pressure when he's pushed up against the cage. " Despite being victorious at UFC 105 Couture admits the he was not satisfied with his performance and will be looking to obtain a more decisive result this time out as well as putting on an exciting fight for the fans. "I wasn't happy with performance, my game plan going in was to grind him down and eventually get top position and pound him out, but he he did a good job in defending the takedown. I know some people didn't think it was too exciting but I know the hardcore fans of the sport enjoy a good strategic battle. I think going up against Mark [Coleman] is a much better fight, stylistically for me to use my wrestling and put on an entertaining fight for the fans" Couture also revealed the implications of the bout with the winner possibly securing a place as the number one contender next in line for a title shot. "From what I've been told the winner of this fight could be next in line for the title, though that's not something that is guaranteed so I really need to come in at my best and make a case for myself." The light-heavyweight division is too stacked for a close win over Brandon Vera (#17) and a win over Mark Coleman (#24) to earn Randy a title shot. Shogun, Rashad, Rampage, Little Nogueira and Anderson Silva should all be ahead of him. But with Randy Couture, you never know.
Winner of Rampage vs Evans is next in line for the title shot or maybe they will need to fight Couture, which would be interesting.
Couture-Coleman isnt for a title shot especially when they fight 3 months before the Shogun-Machida rematch. Couture would need atleast 1 more win and I guess with Rampage-Evans going down it would have to be vs maybe Lil Nog ? Couture beating Vera, Nogueira, Coleman back to back to back would make him deserving.
He is probably just trying to hype the fight. Lets be honest, this fight needs it. At first they was using the hall of famer vs hall of famer tagline and now they are talking about a potential title shot for the winner.
I am tired of Couture, he has quasi Cal Ripken thing...not the best but people like him....I guess he's cool in the fact that he's old school...but meh.... his fights are boring....IMHO
He lost to Vera. He couldn't take Vera down or do ANY damage in the clinch. Vera mounted him at the end, dropped him with a kick and hurt him another time with a kick.
