you're missing the point...i have no problem with duran or any other fighter who steps in the ring. i have nothing but respect for a boxer regardless. what we're talking about here is the fact that this guy was VERY overrated...his ONLY noteworthy win is highly questionable on several levels... he gets over-praised and ranked higher than he deserves....and that's really because a lotta people feel that he validated them in the first leonard fight, esp since srl was one of the most hated fighters around at the time (probably more hated than fmj and rjj in their primes) you admit you're a fan of his and clearly it's because he had a popular, crowd pleasing style... no doubt duran had a huge fan base that helps his profile even when his record doesn't support it. The thing is, any other fighter who had done the things he did would NEVER be ranked in the top all time 10 pfp.
we need to be honest about the old-timers...just because i say duran was not as great as fmj or pea or ssm is not disrespect...i think duran was better than a lotta guys. but it's bogus to look at a guy's record and see that he loses everytime he steps up and still try and rank him high... maybe 30 years ago duran was in the top three of all time lw champs...but his weaknesses are pretty glaring. with the talent in the last few decades he ranks no higher than 7.
we need to stop repeating that sh8t like parrots.. no, he did not convincigly beat srl in the first fight...it was very close and very doubtful and duran took a beating too. no, he was not the best all time at lw. no, he did not beat the best of his era when they were at their best...in fact, in most cases, duran was pretty much dominated by them. he was good enough to beat the davey moore's and iran barkley's....that's respectable. not great.
in my eyes from the times I watched it he beat sugar ray L convincingly the first fight and it was a damn good win everybody already knew anyway that duran was a monster a relentless beast the title 'lets laugh at his career' is the only funny thing in this thread
He's overrated but a ATG. He lost to his rivals more than he won that fact can't be simply overlooked because he was popular. If he never beat SRL in their first fight he would be no where near the top 30 ATG off one win he magically gets put into God status and into the top 10 ATG.
Duran is arguably one of the greatest lightweights of all time ,seems insecure Mayweather fans are the ones that feel the need to tear this guy down ..But the proof is in the record and accomplishments they speak for themselves .
Wow. This is a troll tread, of course, but all we need now is a "let's all laugh at Sugar Ray Robinson" and we'll have s****ed the bottom of the barrell so hard we'll have dirt under our collective nails.
At 20 years of age he beat a helluva fighter in Ken Buchanan to win the title,De Jesus was also a very good lightweight who he beat twice. Fair enough Leonard decided to fight toe to toe against Duran the smaller man first time round, which wasn't considered a good idea, yet Leonard changed tactics during his first fight with Hearns walked him down and the much bigger Hearns couldn't cope, but Duran could?!?! He was formidable and a fantastic defensive fighter while on the front foot and some clown says he was easy to hit. Also it's one thing having an opinion that someone is overrated fair enough, but to start a thread titled "let's laugh at Roberto Duran's Career" apart from being infantile just shows there are trolls who simply have a childish agenda.
