Good win by Huni over 10 although he wasn't at Olympic medal winning standard. He was in his two pro fights last year. He'll go again in three weeks where I expect him to amp it up a bit. He needs to be fighting at a faster pace & with greater intensity leading into the Olympics. He needed those rounds though (they're hard to come by, even in sparring apparently) & Gallen will fight at a faster pace so Huni is tracking okay from my perspective. Olympic gold medals aren't won in May.
I mentioned Antonio Mireles a bit back previously. Qualified for Olympics ... around the same age. 6'8'. United States. https://boxrec.com/en/amateurboxer/861361 Could possibly be a Huni opponent in Tokyo? Don't know much about him tho. Has wins over Jerimah Milton tho.
He didn't fight at the same intensity as his first couple of pro fights but I think the object was to get rounds in which he did. The fact that there were only a couple of fights on the show probably contributed to the NZ networks not picking it up. I enjoyed it.
I think Richard Torrez, who has plenty of international amateur experience, will represent the US in the Super Heavy division. He's decent & a genuine medal chance. Huni faced him in the World Junior Amateur Championships in 2016. Don't think that result is necessarily any indication of how another fight between them would go. The last time we won an Olympic boxing medal our bloke had to go through an American. I saw that one & it wasn't easy then & won't be if Huni has to face Torrez again. The seedings for the Olympic tournament in the Super Heavy division will be interesting. The top two places will go to the blokes from Uzbekistan & Kazakhstan. B/c most of the Olympic qualifiers were cancelled, the Americas representative will automatically get seeded third. Huni made the final of the Asia & Oceania Olympic qualifier but that won't count towards seedings. Nor will walkover results meaning he will only get points for his bronze at the 2019 World Amateur Championships. The guy who won gold in the Commonwealth games will get seeded higher than him. I just hope Huni doesn't get seeded 8th b/c it will mean he ends up facing Jalolov before the medal rounds. 5 or 6 would give him a crack at either the third or fourth seeds in the quarter finals & is where he needs to be.
Thanks for the insights. I'm Australian so I'll be following this. I interact with some Uzbeks here in Korea (there's actually a Russian district near Dongdaemun in Seoul which also has a central Asian area close by) ... and they're right behind Jalolov. Quite looking forward to this Olympics.
Issac Kali Meehan is debuting on a card with Willis Meehan on July 11 in Melbourne Pavillion. I will assume that is a brother.
To be fair to Sirenko, he does stay fairly active despite his relatively low level opposition so far. Having said that, I can't see Ouatah lasting long. Last time I saw him was against Junior Fa where he got KO'd in the 1st round.
I guess at 26 Sirenko hàs time on his side to plug away against limited opposition. Anyone have any thoughts on who could be a good option when he does step up? The last time I watched him was against Bakhtov.
