Both Stevenson and Savon turned down tens of millions of dollars to fight Ali and Tyson. They had country over riches.
I dare say, and I know I'm gonna get a **** storm on me, that this guy was at Savón and Stevenson's level, if not higher: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkX7j_lCNCE[/ame]
I have'nt seen any footage of him until now. Hard to tell from a short piece of footage, but he looked impressive.
Imagine if Savon had turned pro in the early 90's the heavyweight scene might have looked a lot different
Savon was probably one of the top 2 or 3 hardest punchers in boxing history. He was knocking guys out with Amateur type gloves and headgear on.
It definitely would have. He was better than Lewis, Bowe, etc. at the same age. He would have been an awesome pro. He would have been able to grow into that 6'5 frame and fill out properly, and he would have had even more power.
He was impressive. He was kind of a late bloomer, though. he was moved to +91 kg so he didn't fight Savón. Savón fought Balado when Balado was a young guy and defeated him. I sincerely doubt Savón could have defeated the older version of Balado. Sadly, Balado died at a train crossing in Havana, still a very young man. I lived in Cuba when it happened, and I feel very bad about it, even to this day.
Just like stevenson and Balado, Castro has a lot to do with sport history for the past 50+ years, what a shame, and that was in the HW div. Cuba had a few other greats down in weight.
Stevenson and Savon were both great at showing the difference between fully developed grown men and pre-developed teenagers in 3 round fights.:good Someone like Frazier would've blitzed Stevenson in a similar fashion to the way he did Foster, in my opinion. Stevenson couldn't even get past Igor Vysotsky in the amateurs (and was in fact KO'd in their second fight), who was reknowned as being somewhat of an amateur version of Frazier or Marciano.
I agree i remember him and he was starting to get some recognition when he got killed in the accident. :hat
I was just about to post about Balado. That was an absolute tragedy - I think he was potentially better than both of them.
He didnt have the physical ability of savon or stevenson but he could box and move. He was stocky and short not talll or an athletic freak. We would never know though if he couldve been the next great one. :hat
