I'm talking about the way Cotto looked physically. He looked much sharper and quicker to me. Plus his punchout put was better. And spare the one eye excuse because Margarito was attacking him the same way he was in the first fight, Cotto came better prepared for the 2nd. Now if your gonna tell me that the Cotto that fought Margarito in the rematch isn't better than the one that fought Mayorga, well why don't YOU explain why he isn't? Lay it on me and everyone else?
Nope. That DLH, was still a big strong champion at Jr. MW. He had power and good handspeed. He was taller than Cotto, longer reach, better boxer, and Cotto doesn't have the greatest of beards. Oscar would've hurt him at some point and got him out of there.
The Cotto against Mayorga was in the same class as the one in Margarito 2. But having already fought Margarito once, he knew how to better execute his gameplan in the second plan, an not too make the same mistakes, whereas Margarito was the exact fighter and fought the exact same fight. Plod forward, block punches with his face, and hope Cotto fades at the end of the fight.
Oscar gave PBF his best fight so I don't know what some are saying Oscar was a shell of himself. So if he was not a shell of himself, he would have beaten PBF easily? I would love to see Cotto beat PBF on May 5th, but I still don't know what he still has. I can't use the Margarito fight or Foremen to say he can beat PBF or the Oscar that fought PBF that night. Either Cotto will fold or give us the best fight of his life. Cotto knows he has to win this fight to be acknowledged as one of the best. So don't sleep on him and Oscar is retired so who cares.
Also De La Hoya was a great finisher. He would hurt Cotto at some point because Cotto unlike Mayweather isnt particularly hard to find. Oscar still has a wicked left hook and his power was in tact even then. All around he was still better in every department than Cotto.
Not punchout put wise or stamina he wasn't. And if he knew how to execute his gameplan better, don't you credit that to the new trainer Diaz? Unless your gonna tell me that had nothing to do with it or your gonna tell me any trainer can put together a good stragey. Because if that was the case than he would of stayed with Joe Santigo.
DLH. He is a great fighter. Cotto is slower, has no defense, and does not punch as hard. DLH is also a better fit for 154, Cotto seems to small for the division. DLH is a different class of fighter. Additionally, that DLH might have been in better physical condition because he didn't take the beatings Cotta had until this point. Cotto is a good fighter, but he is massively overrated. I love watching him fight but he is not in DLH's class.
The current version of Cotto is also a former shell of himself. Oscar has better skills and physical tools, so I would go with DLH. But, undefeated & confident Cotto beats washed-up DLH for sure
He fought DLH @ 154... He's fighting Cotto @ 154! Will Floyd Man the **** up and fight Sergio @ 154?? Sergio would be the favorite... Thats why Floyd wouldn't take the fight! :-(
Floyd said he looks at Cotto as an undefeated fighter based on the circumstances surrounding the Margarito and Pacquaio fights.(I agree with him on the Margarito but not Pacquaio) And Cotto said his confidence has been restored after his outing in the 2nd Margarito fight, unless your gonna tell me that he's full of **** because this is what the man has said recently.
He can have all of the confidence in the world but he took some serious punishment in the Margarito, Clottey, and Pacquiao fights. Saying Cotto is undefeated doesn't take those punches away. They still landed and he got beat down. I think DLH would beat this Cotto, especially with Roach in his corner for the fight. Too fast, granite chin, better ring IQ, and more tools. Cotto is not built to fight the kind of fighter DLH is, with every physical advantage coupled with better boxing skills.
De la Hoya would take this, quite handily. More skilled than Cotto, quicker, good footwork and a decent jab (better than Cottos at least). Not to mention his underratedly strong chin.
