I think Cormier could defintely put Jones on his back but he's a little small, I could see Jones picking him apart from the outside and this is MMA not wrestling. As much as I really like Cormier I have to go with Jones.
It's a brilliant fight to consider though eh? I'm a Cigano fan, but would dearly love to see this match-up.
Jones would have to stay on the outside, where he would enjoy an almost 14 inch reach advantage. As great as Jones' wrestling has looked, you have to assume that Cormier would have little trouble with him in that area. We have never seen Jones on his back (not counting his last second guard pulls against Rampage and Rashad), and that's really something I am interested in seeing. I think that Jones should be able to pick him apart from the outside, but Cormier is definitely one of the most interesting macthes out there for him.
If Cormier was in shape he'd be 205, but he's not even close.... At any rate though he's currently the most impressive fighter i've seen in a long time, and I think he beats Jones handily. Anybody who can pick up and slam Barnett like that, and his striking is sick for his size. I'm impressed with Jones, I'm impressed with dos santos, but I definitely have the highest expectations for Cormier.
Really interesting match up...I've been a Cormier fan since the first tie I saw him...his clinic on Big Foot was Legendary.... !
Lot of fat, like Fedor ! He weighed 238 for the Barnett fight...at least at the weight in... He could easily lose 15 to 20 pound of fat !
Maybe, but would he be the same fighter? People said this about Fedor his whole career. Some guys cut and be as big in their weight class as possible and some guys would rather not do that as they maybe feel better when hydrated and well fed in the build up to a fight. Cormier V Cigano, now THAT is a fight I'd like to see. It may well turn out to be the fight we all thought Cigano V Cain was going to be.
I don't like that level of wrestling mixed with that level of power mixed with the ability to do it to significantly bigger fighters. I wish Cain, Cormier and others would live right and make 205. I know some of them are legit heavies but too many fighters are hurting the talent pool in other divisions, especially the bigger they get.
This is how... This content is protected This content is protected He carries a lot of excess weight, that much is obvious. Guys like Thiago Alves, Chael Sonnen, Forrest Griffin and Jon Jones cut 20-30lbs for every fight. I think if Cormier (at 5ft 11in or whatever he is) can lose the excess fat by whipping himself into proper shape decisively, he won't even have to lose that much for every fight, his natural weight is probably close to 205. He is short and carrying too much for now. That is the question though. I think Cormier COULD easily make 205, but would losing some of his bulk compromise his exceptional grappling strength? I believe Roy Nelson would be a mediocrity at 205, it's his bulk that gives him his resilience and power. Cormier's technique and skills are too good for his own effectiveness to be as compromised as Nelson's by a big drop in weight, but it could easily be that Cormier is still diminished by the cut.
I think Velasquez is a legit heavyweight, I don't believe he could make 205 without damaging himself, even if he did live like a monk. Guy has a big body frame. He's not as big as the superheavyweights like Brock and Bigfoot, but he can still be in very trim, tight physical condition at 240lbs, which is way above the 205 region. This content is protected
